Hobby Model Japan Akitsumaru

Hello chums, I finally made a start on the Akitsumaru. Heavily reinforced with greyboard and with some re-drawn additions. I haven't diverted from the spirit of the design, which is very good, but have added things like winches and bollards. So far, so good.

I have also opened up the stern section to show the landing craft bay. It is all conjectural of course, but it will be a point of interest when mounted on a base.

Very nice start. When you have completed the model, would you be able to share your modifications with us non-designer grasshoppers?

Dear Bernie:
What is the scale of your model?
Are you still doing the simpler one in 1/350?
Looking forward to your build.

Hello folks, many thanks for your replies. The kit is 1/350th scale and I am building it according to the supplied instructions. However, as previously stated, I have added some extra details. I have been designing/adjusting the kit parts on the fly using Serif Draw Plus 5 and have incorporated them on a step by step basis. When I am close to finishing, i will get the parts rearranged into some semblance of order and will post them in the download section as a PDF.

Stay tooned.

For once I was wondering when did Hobby Model get into watercraft... Then I realised I broke the sentence in the wrong place.

I can see it coming along nicely. The stern bay will be an interesting detail to look at, from what I can remember there is still quite a debate on how the bay doors actually looked like at different parts of her career.

One problem I have with kits from Japan is they never make that step towards realism... They provide the basic shape, and everything from there onwards is artistic rendering. I have yet to encounter a model that defies this observation - Maybe their plastic modelling culture has such a powerful pull, that anyone looking for a degree of realism in modelmaking wouldn't even begin to consider cardmodels. Though, I do know they have very detailed cardmodel scratchbuilders working in 1:100 sort of scales, just not as kits...

Hi Lex, It should be Papermodel Japan! You are right about the level of detail and simplification, so to remedy this I am re-jigging some of the parts. I have made a mess of the hull along the vertical joins, so will be restarting the build.

Many thanks

Wow good luck with the rebuild then. I look forward to seeing how far you go with the re-drawing. Say, making those windows and openings into relief, possibly the internal ribs too inside the bays, could add a lot of effects to the model - if conducted cleanly. Just some unjustified thought on my part that is. :P
