Shirase second take
Dear Herky and All:
When I didn't know I was a paper modeler, the Japanese Coast Guard was my paper modeling site. I did almost all the models there with a few exceptions and I gave them away. I also did the apocryphal Governor Class from the USCG using the Erimo in my What if USCG. Any way, for the last Shirase, I borrowed a EH-101 from a simple Shirase, and then, from the same site of the JMSDF, the EH-101 in larger scale and reduce it to 1/400. At the end you will see the majestic icebreaker escorted by a couple of patrol boats from the JCG site. Happy modeling. |

Tor Viking by Oliver Bizer
Thank you Foute Man:
I did that icebreaker long time ago, at that time was the only available on internet. Be aware that the walls of the bridge are asymmetrical. The best way to fix it is to slice it by the middle and copy the mirror image. I guess this is the simplest model of an icebreaker. I used the hull to do my CCGS Andrew Forester mentioned in the previous page. This time I show the Tor Viking designed by Oliver Bizer, that Lorenzo mentioned. I just did a "manita de gato" a "little paw of cat" meaning minor cosmetic enhancements due to the increase in scale. I just added a boat and a helipad. I hope you like it. This could be recolored to do CCGS Vincent Massey or the two sister vessels, CCGS Captain Molly Kool and CCGS Jean Goodwill. ps: I thought it was going to be simple. |

Hi Pablo! Very cute icebreakers!
Can you please share the Mil Mi-2 heli at 1-400 scale from Lenin ship? Many thanks in advance! PS Sikorsky from the Olli's Tor Viking is also very welcome.

Marabout Polaire
Following the advice of Foute Man I decided to do a draft of the French icebreaker.
Nevertheless I could not find any reference to such vessel so instead the pattern of the Finnish icebreakers of the 60's was used with buff and black. It took me more time recoloring and doing minor cosmetics than cutting and building it. The funnel was clipped a little bit and two masts were added. The glue was still drying when I started to take the pictures. As I mentioned this is the simplest and simplistic there are and is in draft format. I hope you like it. I am calling it the Maraboute Polaire. ps Thank you Foute Man for all the wealth of info that you provided In the past I used its hull for the Canadian Cost Guard Icebreaker Forester (a what-if project). |

This is the opposite of Pietro's Scharnhorst
Dear All:
After looking at Pietro's Scharnhorst, this is the opposite. As many of you know the Japanese Coast Guard has a series of simple models of patrol vessels. The reference is here: Mini contest entry: Japan Coast Guard fleet. Although I can't see the pictures but the link is hot. From the Japanese version of Wikipedia courtesy of our friend Google Translate: The "Soya (JCG Souya, PLH 01) is a patrol boat of the Japan Coast Guard. The classification is PLH (Patrol vessel Large with Helicopter), and the nominal ship type is the one with a helicopter. Among the vessels registered with the Japan Coast Guard, it is the longest-lived ship after the first “Soya” (PL107), which is a preserved ship, and is the oldest ship in operation as a patrol boat. This is the first patrol boat (PLH) with helicopter operation capability built for the Japan Coast Guard, and is the only icebreaker in PLH." I just added a few implants, volumizing the mast, with a helicopter on the helipad, and a picture of the original model. I hope you like it: |

Simple but not simplistic Horyzont II
This is a very well design model of the "Horyzont II" by JSC (286) reduced from 1/250 to 1/400 with some photo-etched and minor additions to the masts. It is relatively simple to build, a two pager but when reduced a one pager. I did it before I knew I was a Papermodeler and I didn't have kids, at least a decade ago.
The RTS "Horyzont II", built by Remontowa for the Gdynia Maritime University, is an ice resistant research and training ship, for practice in navigation, radar positioning, maneuvering, engine room and deck equipment servicing. It is also employed to perform research works in co-operation with the Polish Academy of Sciences during her expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctica. I hope you like it, and if so, let me know. |
