Akitsumaru

Hi all,

Decided to start a new thread on this as I made a mess of the last one. By collaborating with other modellers here, new information has come to light regarding layout and colours. So, my re-colour grew arms and legs and has transformed into quite a substantial modification to the original kit. I will describe these throughout the thread.

On with the build. I cut the tabs off of the keel plates and joined these with scrap card. I have removed the after part to display the stern doors open.

I have replaced the card internals with a new heavy-card core, which incorporates shear along the length of the ship. The upshot of this is a total redesign of the decks and flight deck supports.

Starting with the bow section.

Wish me luck!

Good luck. a small piece of advice with ship models particularly waterline kits is to tack down the bottom to an absolutely flat piece of material. I use a glass slat that used to be on a display shelf. you could use shelving material made of the press board stuff, those things are pretty flat. this allows a very straight framework to build up the hulls and helps eliminate the banana look.

I've been waiting for this! Especially the 'substantial modifications' part.

I love model-hobby designs, they pack so much detail in their kits but wow it takes a full time job to finish one of them. I have the IJN shinano, and the part count is in the thousands, let alone the wire templates they give for the non paper parts.

Cmdrted, Don, Lex, John, et al, thanks for all of your input. The Model Hobby kit is certainly impressive, but this one should do me for now.

I am still making small adjustments to some of the formers as I progress the beta, but here is a sample of the hull parts sheet. I have toned down the rather garish green of the original, but I feel that it is still too bright. I may have to go back and lighten it a bit more.

As you can see, I have staggered the hull joins as this was one of the problems I had with the original. I just could not get a neat, flush joint! There is a new bridge support sponson with some interior detail for the brave as well as anchors, doors and accommodation ladders.

Stay tooned.

The hull sides look good in their more subdued colors, and the segmented hull looks like a good fix for the problem of the one-piece hull sides wrinkling.

Very much look forward to seeing how it comes together.

I am not liking the outlines for the stern bay doors. I think they assume the shape as shown on the parts because the stern is very curved towards the waterline, and the cut is actually pretty rectangular when viewed from the right angle. The model does not have that complex waterline curve, so I am wondering how you will deal with this section - especially you plan to open it.

Almost done

Hello all,

Just giving this thread a little bump. I have almost finished the re-draw, with just some page rearrangements etc. So far I have 12 pages of parts including two for the air-group. This is a substantial re-jig of the kit as supplied with very many new parts. Masahiro Kushima, the author, from Paper Model Workshop has very kindly agreed to let me share the re-draw.

Some new build photos to follow soon.

Stay tooned
