Downloadable NDL Europa, 1930

Hello,
checked & know this site was on the free dowloads subforum, but did not see there any mention of the 1930s era paper model of Europa.
https://www.kartonmodellbau.org/neur...ppin2.shtml.de

German site, Working Group for the History of Papermodelling, historical models from Neuruppin Museum presented. Europa is the last on the page, I ran across this while researching Bremen.

Photo of completed ship looks to capture the prototype's character pretty well, especially considering the paper toy-like models of Queen Mary andNormandie from the 1930s.

4 image files and German PDF on tips to build, asymmetric parts, 13mm too long on the base plate, etc. If I understand correctly and it's printed on similar sized stock as the original, it would have a length of 82cm, nearly 1/350th if the length accurate to the original.

hope someone may find this useful

Question

So, 18 lifeboats of 28 in on Bremen, I realized I had been doing them wrong and went to the local office supply store to have them copied, this model had been sitting in my head as 'next', so to conserve trips, I made some small modifications and had the ship printed.

The initial changes were to scale her to 1/400 to match her sister, get rid of the cartoony Popeye Anchors, correct the number of bridge windows to 12 from 5. I don't think her designer, believed to be Gustav Kühn, would mind.

If anything, for the time & being contemporary to Europa herself, he did an amazing job, and figure, all the many things that are right to the prototype far outweigh the things that aren't. And I liked the idea of having the two great ships come from two seperate 'yards'- publishers- just like AG Weser-DESCHIMAG and Blohm & Voss. Europa would come secondly, just like the real thing...and the real ships were built concurrently, so surely....

So, she's not as accurate by current standards, snd I've purposely left in place some of the period coloring...blue windows, red railings. And I'm not building her true to the 1930s model...so I'mon my own fool's errand. Did want to work on some build quality issues to see if i had learned some of Bremen's lessons. And no wavy decks this time.

She scaled to 1/400 beautifully. As per the tips PDF (Hinweise.pdf), the base plate/keel was too long for the hull sides, by about 10mm in 1/400. Rather than re-sculpt the bow per the pdf I pulled the excess out of the middle where the ship's sides are parellel. Hinweise.pdf also had the upper promenade (lifeboat deck, top level of model's hull construction)shortened in several places. I didn't find that but instead a 5mm gap where the aft end of the Promenade deck should have met the frame but didn't; the model's design uses lap joints in between hull skins, beginning at bow, working aft. I had trimmed the tabs, and edge glued the skins together with a binding plate on the inside, working bow to stern.

Built up a more robust frame first as the original design only has 6 transverse frames (two of which the builder in 1930 was to cut him or herself from Postcard or strong cardboard). Working aft, built the three exposed aft decks as a subassembly spaced off the model's frame by 5mm.

Bow & Stern: Kühn hit the bow stem angle perfectly as an engineering side elevation of Europa overlays his stem dead on, and from this I transferred the anchor/hawsepipe recesses pretty well directly. The model suggests a pointy bow, but we know hers was curved, the stem thicker at the waterline, whereas Bremen was more knifelike. Rolling an appropriate curve wasn't hard, but the ink from the office supply joint's printer is very ready to rub away on such a worked part. Originally, I was going to go with a printed anchor shape, but decided to cut recesses and build anchors. The stern presented other challenges: the model's design is a narrow curve, nearly the prototype's point, but not, and the deck ends up too low to the surrounding skin, just like the Hinweise.pdf predicted. The skin component itself rolls into a shape like that of Queen Maryor Pasteur/Bremen (V). It took me like 4 attempts to get a shape that wasn't horrible. The aft 80mm of hull felt like they took up half of the time I have put into her at this point.

oh, and the model has no sheer; the bow tips up forward of the forward bulkhead on B deck, then she's flat. That curve is the 1 thing I wish I could give her.

So, I'm on my fool's errand, but back to Bremen first, and many lifeboats.

Hello there,
why thank you for the compliment; the full-hull ship is 1/400 Schreiber model of Bremen, the waterline model is Europa.

Both are unfinished, but had photographed them together to show I'd sized Europa to her sister.

I'm sorry the link didn't work for you, Kühn's model is the very last on the page: 4 image files for each sheet of the model + Hinweise.pdf.

Below left to right:
-top portion of sheet 1 of the model.(the sheet itself is like 7MB)
-photo of completed Europa by Schulz, I assume a builder with AGK. This photo is at the top of the model's download section at the AGK site.
-my unfinished ships, Bremen left, Europa right.

Sorry for not being clear and too wordy all at the same time

interesting detail on both the "Bremen" and the "Europa" is the floatplane that was catapulted from the upperdeck when in the vicinity of land to deliver mail even earlier and faster.....

see attached image, original file cannot be linked, but image is titled: "Katapult-Flugzeug_des_Dampfers_Europa"

So 19th March marks 90 days since Europa entered service...

I'll try to show more & explain less. Restaurant section is appx 25mm too short... so I started there.

For reference, in addition to photos taken of her, Deutsches Schiffahrtmuseum has some Blohm & Voss documentation:
http://www.digipeer.de/index.php?sf=0&bs=0&al=Europa

And then some thoughtful person filmed what appears to be the Shipyard model:

If a publisher decides to make a modern model of her where all her wonderful hull curves show through, I'm in
