JSC "four-stack' destroyers are a great way to to start the adventure with paper models of waterline warships. That's how I got into scratchbuilding of Pacific War ships in 1/1000 scale later.

The very first paper model of the ship I did was the USS Ward from JSC, also in 1/400, also very similar to the HMS Campbeltown and also quite easy to build. But when I finished it, I found out there're no other ships I'd love to build. And right here starts the story of my scratchbuilding...

Good luck with the HMS Campbeltown and who knows, maybe one day you'll be able to choose any ship you want and build it from scratch?

Kacper, they are great kits and with some excellent accessories! I have just recieved the Battle of the River Plate set. 4 kits for 22.5 Euros (£19), including postage, direct from JSC Poland. I'll do an unboxing later.

Meanwhile, work progresses with the deck elements. Various hatches, lockers and vents fitted before moving to the attachment of the hull sides and 01 decks.

Progressing nicely with the hull sides, bridge and gun deck fixed in place. I was dreading the attachment of the hull sides because of the large area. But it went without a hitch by using UHU yellow and gluing small sections at a time.

I have a brief window during packing to chip in, no modelling though till next week, and I thought that I would share one of the photos of Campbeltown during her conversion.

I have based my modifications on this and the ones from the Anatomy of the Ship book. Clearly seen in this photo are the corticine decking panels. These were left in place but painted over; The mounting bases for the depth-charge thrower and after torpedo tube; and all the extra bits-and-bobs for the raid. Of note is the raised access hatch to the after engine room and the prominent vent in the centre, these are not provided in the kit so will have to be added. As a little amusing aside, if you look at the dockyard worker on the starboard side, under the 20mm mounting, he is bent over a box. In another photo, this is seen as his toolbox, but is actually given in the GPM kit as some sort of locker!

The colour for the raid was described as overall Mountbatten Pink and it looks from the picture that everything on the upperworks was painted thus, decks, lockers, everything! So, working on the second part by colouring everything this shade.

Thanks Beachead. A small update with the build. I am managing to continue building from my portable tray while my workshop is being completed.



Additions from the laser-cut set. I can't emphasise enough how wonderfull these sets are, they add crisp, precise detail to already great kits. In this set can be seen the engine room hatches, guard rails, doors and hatches.
