USS Monitor 1:100
hi all, back to card models.
The Monitor kit was recently updated and re-released. I have been working on it for the last month while waiting for my Joseph Conrad to come home. Here is the deck just completed. Everything fits very well. The design is superb. I have found 2 mistakes. Part 61 L/R is labeled 62 L/R on the part sheet. Not a problem. There are required 16 of part 60 but I can only find 14 after searching all of the part sheets. This required some improvisation. I am really enjoying building this model. It is wonderfully well designed. cheers Jim |

That frame appears to require much work (last two images).
I'll enjoy watching. |

Good job so far. Did you get the large sheets professionally printed, or did you print them out yourself?
Looking forward to your updates. |

Thanks for pointing out those two errors Jim, the last thing I did was re-number over 800 parts and I was in a big rush, I'm not surprised to see them, they have now been corrected, thanks!

hi all, some small progress on the hull.
I had the printing done at the local copy store. They worry about copyrights but having the PDF file is proof enough. I was surprised that they could do 18/12, usual is 17/11. Cost slightly less than $20. It requires some study of the diagrams to get the tabs going in the right direction. I think I have the frames in right. I had some question about which side faced front. Having the parts in hand sometimes makes things clearer. cheers Jim |

It looks like you are off to a good start Jim, only about 45 more bulkheads to go...

thanks FRD,
Some more bulkheads in. This is officer country. The first bay is for the Captain and Exec or first mate or whatever they were called then. The second bay is for the the junior officers and behind that the crew space. cheers Jim |

More frames.
The solid frame is the delimiter between the living spaces and the machinery space. Since they burned coal this was probably important. It also is the strong point for the turret pivot. Next a lot of almost identical frames in the machinery space. cheers Jim |

hi all,
A lot of the frames in place. not quite all of them yet. They are all kind of wiggly at this point. So much is cut away that they have no strength. This is supposed to be corrected by gluing the tabs to the hull bottom. Cutting out the frames is getting kind of tedious so I am going to go out of sequence and put the hull bottom on now. Hopefully it makes no difference. The last picture shows the inside of the hull bottom. Each frame has a location. cheers Jim |
