Thanks for the reactions, I appreciate them.
Construction has stood still for a while due to completion of another build, but finally I made some progress last week. I continued with the constructions on the deck There will be four big guns on the deck, two in front and two in the back. Finished with a fence from the lasercut set: The same type of constructions on the backside of the deck: There a two little guns to make, not to complicated: And this is the current state. Construction is going well so far. What is striking is that not everything fits exactly. Many parts need a little adjustment, but it is doable. Arjan |

Hi Arjan,
That's a pretty cool and very elegant model! You're very modest about the 'not too complicated' little gun!!! I'd love to know the whole process and the tricks you use (and indeed skill!!) to get that result! Regards, Alan |

Thanks Alan, I will try to pay a little more attention to that in the future. Also feel free to ask for it.
I continued the building of the back deck. I assembled a floor, supported by four post: On this comes a wall with an opening for the guns. These are difficult to make, they doesn't fit very well. I tried to make the best of it: When glued on the ship, there was a little gap between the floor and the wall, so I decide to glue a little stroke of paper between it. Then two guns were installed, the same type of the two I maked earlier: Two little constructions to fill the empty white spots: And finish this part with the fence: |

Nice work Arjan.
The two guns with the black laser cut control wheels look a lot like the ones on SMS Beowulf (HMV). Very fine. Mike |

Turrets
I don't know which fit is the best, regarding the way the paper model was designed, but, regarding the armoured turrets building process of the real steel stuff, the cover plate, much thinner than the vertical sides, rests upon the thick sides they are riveted to, so the latter do not encircle the top plate. Rather difficult to work out well with paper, however.

Thanks a lot for the pictures Renaud, very much appriciated!
These are very difficult to find, and really useful. About the cover plate you're absolutely right. I have no thought about it but it makes perfect sense to put the cover plate on top of the vertical sides. I think it was designed that way in the model, although the instructions aren't very clear about it. The reason I put the cover plate in between is because then you get the best round of the vertical side. So for the best accuracy it might have been better to put an extra cover plate on top. Absolutely something to keep in mind for a next build! |

Steel structures / paper structures
How far a paper model must attempt at matching the hidden building process leading to the definitive shape of the original stuff.....? Plato vs rococo, and the long debated question of the "design", as to the shape of the underwater hull, the way the superstructures are arranged. Now, the latter tend to be invisible to radars, it expands the field further on.
