Operation Chariot Escorts

Hello Chums,

Lockdown can be dispiriting at times, but I have been keeping myself busy with lots of projects. Work continues on a variety of card, garden and garage stuff, I think variety is the secret of survival here. Anyhoo, I have been tinkering with a new Hunt Type 1 design to accompany HMS Campbeltown. There will be two, HMS Atherstone and HMS Tynedale. I have attached screenshots of the work in progress which is almost done. I still have a bit of tinkering with the ships boats to do. As the kits are quite detailed, I am trying to keep the boats at an equal level in keeping with the scale, which is of course 1/400 scale.

Keep busy my friends.

Looks very good, Bernie. I always thought the Hunt class ships were good-looking. Is that a Western Approaches camouflage scheme?

Checking the history of Atherstone, I see that in November 1943 the ship was involved in rescuing survivors of the troop transport HMT Rohna, which was attacked and sunk off the coast of Algeria by a German radio-controlled glide bomb. 1,138 men were killed, of which 1,015 were U.S. personnel, the largest loss of U.S. troops at sea due to enemy action in a single incident.

On Wednesday, 14 October, at 1900, the U.S. Army Heritage Center Foundation will present a webinar on the Rohna Incident. The webinar will be presented by Jason Markiewitz and Michael Walsh, members of The Rohna Survivors Memorial Association. I do not know if Atherstone's role will be mentioned, but the virtual event is open to the public, and you can register in advance here: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/regi...TmK7FvbBanZkBQ

Thank you for sharing those WIP.
Looking forward to the escort fleet of Operation Chariot.
That camo is very attractive and in my favorite scale!

Thanks Don. Yes, it's a Western Approaches scheme. My research has come up with all sorts of interpretations of the colours used, so I plumped for a pale blue-grey for the blue and a dirty off-white. These were the same shades I used for Campbeltown. Atherstone and Tynedale both used this scheme but with different patterns. Information about deck colours are difficult to come by, so I have had to go by a few written descriptions. These are Cemtex (a mixture of sand, cement and a rubberising agent) which dried a dirty buff colour and deck grey.

I have registered for the webinar, so I look forward to stopping by.

Pablo, these should look good sailing in formation with the coastal forces craft.

I somehow missed this thread. Original JSC's HMS Campbeltown is grey, so I guess you must have scanned and recolored it. Well done!

Thanks Kazziga. As much as I love JSC kits, some of the colours used can be a bit iffy at times, hence the scan, redraw and recolour, and, really not that difficult. With the Atherstone though, I couldn't use any of the parts of the JSC Slazac as this is a Class 2 which has numerous subtle differences to the class 1. So, Atherstone is a totally new model design, hence the time taken so far
Thanks for stopping by.
