Css palmetto state

Hi I am working on this ship from the American Civil War and I have many doubts about the system used to raise and lower the rescue boats into the water. I have seen many photos about this and none of these systems seems logical to me.I think that due to the position of the sides of the boat, the maneuver should be sliding, on wooden panels that would be submerged for a short time in the water and would be lifted by the davits, once the life boat was placed on top of them.

I put a photo based on a drawing of the time, where it is seen that the davits were pulling something other than the rescue boats
Does anyone really know what the system was like?
Very grateful and regards

Maybe something like this?
the davits will pull the wooden base.
The life boat is attached by ropes to the wooden base
????

Excellent model, very good-looking diorama, and persuasive speculation on the boat handling mechanism.

Yes Don, I will present it in diorama.
I think it was basically a river or lake boat, so I will anchor it to a river bank

ships boats would usually be mounted on the rear deck or much closer to the ships waterline than shown in drawings, plans or on models.here are some photos of the real ships.

Thank you for the photos, which provide me with valuable information. However, I have already made a decision based on this image below. But as you say, the logical thing is to place the davits close enough to be able to launch the rescue boats directly. I have no turning back. I think that in this boat the system would be the one that I put in my photo cheers and thank you again

By coincidence, the current issue of Naval History Magazine has an article on CSS Palmetto State and Chicora.

The on-line version seems to be available only to subscribers, but the attractive lead-in painting and the endnotes are viewable: https://www.usni.org/magazines/naval...nfederate-navy

Hello, Don Thanks for the link. In the Civil War section there are valuable photos. I think the Chicora and Palmetto were different in that Chicora had the lifeboats at the stern.

Hi I thought about making a diorama, because I didn't have the submerged part of the helmet in the cutout. I was interested in the complete ship, as well as with some plans and photographs I designed and printed by computer. Since I had to join two halves, the process was somewhat complicated, but in the end this was the result. The bottom of the bows, I got it by printing the top and cutting to size Now I will finish the cover and its accessories Cheers
