HMS Enterprise

Thank you friends one and all. Just giving this a bump as I am at the boring bit of filling and sanding the hull.



The joints are sealed with super-glue (cyano), filled with Polyfiller and sanded.

However, I have also been assembling some of the fittings which will be visible once the upper deck is in place. The kit comes with a full set of furniture for the captain's staterooms, but I have decided not to fit these due to the deadline. They wouldn't be visible even if I cut the windows out anyway.

Galley stove and anchor bitts. Capstan and main deck hatches.



The bitts, along with all of the other structural components, are laminations of 1mm board and painted accordingly.

Hell of a kit!

Hi all,

Due to covid, I had the deadline pushed back on this build to later this year. So, the progress so far. I had some problems with the fit and alignment of parts around the stern galleries, so a lot of testing and adjusting of the parts with some infill pieces.

I am at the stage of fitting outer hull parts and decoration. Bow area has been changed with the addition of a new figurehead from cast metal.



Head gallery supports from the kit with the gratings from paper.

In the next image, there is an infill piece right at the after end of the quarterdeck. There was a 2mm gap here when everything was in place.



The stern section was a particularly awkward fit with gaps around the quarter galleries, which have been filled here with off-cuts of paper. These will be hidden later with gold trim. The rudder post also did not fit so had to be scratch built.



As Can be seen, the name has been changed to Fox. Last image, overall state of play. Some guns, deck fittings and trim before fitting the masts.

Lovely work.
I see this is HMS Enterprise.
It reads "Fox" on the stern.
Is there a story behind that?

Yes! I have used Enterprise as the basis for a conversion to HMS Fox, 1745. The Fox Landed Sir John Cope's troops at Dunbar and provided crew to man the artillery at the battle of Prestonpans on Sept 21 1745. The Fox was 24 guns, but of the standard Frigate design which lasted from 1740 to the end of the century. The model will be on display at the Presonpans Historical Society museum (in Prestonpans, East Lothian) when completed.

As I recollect, the Battle of Prestonpans did not turn out well for Sir John Cope ("Hey, Johnnie Cope, are Ye Wauking Yet?").

I'm sure the local museum will not mind too much but the 6th rate Fox involved with the Battle of Prestonpans carried 20 guns and was built to the 1733 Establishment and launched in 1740. It was around 12 feet shorter and 3 feet narrower than the frigate Enterprise of 28 guns (the subject of the Shipyard kit) and its sister ship Fox launched in 1773. This 20-gun Fox was wrecked in November 1745, two months after the battle. The Fox with 24 guns was launched in 1746 and was built to the 1741 Establishment which made it about 6 feet longer than the previous Fox. It was lost in a hurricane in 1751. This from Rif Winfield, British Warships in the Age of Sail 1714-1792 and David Lyon, The Sailing Navy List.

Don, no, it did not. But at least he made it back to Berwick Upon Tweed.

Maurice, That is information that I could not find during my research for the ship. I am sure that the folks at the museum will not be too upset that she is just a teensy bit off. She will look the part though when in her glass case. I will keep you all appraised of this of course.
