Russian monitor SMERCH - 1865 - 1:250
Hello to all worldwide paper modelers and Happy New Year to everybody !!!
As "first task" for this new year, I have finally completed a paper model of the Russian turret ship SMERCH of 1865, in the equipment of 1870 with main artillery composed by 2 Obukhov 220 mm (9 inches) guns hosted in the two protected towers fore and aft the bridge and some quick-firing light guns on the upper bridges. The model kit has been published by Paper Shipwright in 1:250 scale and presented an average difficulty in the building. All the construction has been made by paper in several thickness, with the only exception for some mast standing rigging and the plexiglass case.. This is another little ship of the historical period I like more than others (from 1860 until the end of the century ) where the warship technologies made a lot of changes in the ship's silhouettes. Again a big wish to everybody for a 2020 full of joy in paper modeling !! ciao Jp Here some pics of the finished model

Very nice work with this monitor.
All those fine details should be preserved for a long time beneath that dust cover. Mike |

Interesting looking thing. Went and played in Google a bit trying to find answer by my own effort, but I'm going to have to ask what the white structure behind foremast is?
Also found that according to footnoted info in Wikipedia the ship's hull, at least, had a long life in various uses and several adventures, launched in June, 1864, scrapped in April, 1959. So close to a hundred years!
