HMS Atherstone

Hello chums, as part of the Operation Chariot project, I have designed the Hunt Type 1 destroyers HMS Atherston and HMS Tynedale which formed the escort to the St Nazaire raid flotilla.

The kits are in 1/400 scale and have a core of heavy card for the main structures. This may seem to be a bit of over-engineering for this small size, but I am comfortable with this type of construction.

The parts were quick to cut out and assemble.

Stay tooned.

Always a pleasure to see your modeling skills in action, Bernie, and I really like this good-looking Hunt-class.

I like how a side plate is provided to ease construction. This is coming together very clean, keep it up

Don, many thanks, glad you are enjoying it. They were very handsome ships, but were unfortunately inherently unstable, hence the constant war-time development. The final Type 3 and 4 series managed to fix most of the problems.

SmashedGlass thanks for stopping by.

Lex, the side plates worked very well by providing additional support.

Progress continues with the attachment of the hull sides and deck layering.

The hull flare and shear has worked extremely well with the underlying structure supports.

I have experimented with drilling out the hawse pipes to give better definition in this area. I find that flat detail can be too noticeable in this area.

Hopefully, the PDF should be in the downloads section soon.

Stay tooned.

How do you prevent the hull from warping?

The heavy-card structure prevents warping and keeps all parts stable.
