Making hawse-pipes

Hello chums,

Something I like to have on my ships are hawse- pipes that look as though they might work. My technique for this is shown here. A hole is poked between the deck and hull.

This is then cleaned up with a sharp blade and a very fine round file. I used to do this when I built plastic ships, but it is so much easier with card. The inside is then sealed with a dilute mix of paint.

Anchor-ways are punched from spare colour, in this case 3.5mm with a 1.5mm hole slightly offset from centre.

These are then fixed to the hull with pva.

Some weathering is applied with pastels and pencils before attaching the anchor chain.

Stay tooned.

Thank you Chums!

Some small progress with details. I have been busy drawing up new weapons, boats and life-rafts which will be added towards the end, but meantime I weathered the fo'csle' and added bases for the bollards.

The funnels have been reinforced with card and weathering applied to the mid-deck area.

The fit of the parts is excellent and is a joy to build.

Well chums, thank you all and have a great Christmas and New Year celebration.

Forby the fact that the main structural elements go together quickly, the details always take longer. I spent a pleasant few hours adding extra stuff to the funnels.

The Carley Floats are just placed, but the close-up shows some ragged edges, so some clean-up required there.

The supplied screens fitted perfectly.

I have never been proficient with small cylinders such as searchlights etc., but the kit supplied ones went together with no problems.

Small details such as gun mounts and barrels are are being tested at the moment

Happy holidays.
