A jig can easily be made for making thread railings by using a threaded rod or long bolts - one on each side of a rectangle.

I have just given my jig away to a friend (they are easy to make) but it is easy enough to describe.

Get a piece of old plywood and cut a rectangle out the size of your potential railing areas (remember the future). Or make a frame from four small pieces of strip wood.

You can then get one or two lengths of threaded rod (very cheap) and cut these for the two long and short sides. You also need 8 nuts to fit.

Glue the nuts on each side. Thread the bolts on and done!

----------------------

There are other ways to make the jig - you just need the 4 "bolts" arranged in a rectangle.

I used the same jig to make ratlines etc for small-scale ships.

If this description is unclear, tell me and I will do a drawing for you. Or lay out the parts (which I have) and take photos for you.

---------------------

The railing thread then goes in the bolt threads when you are making the railings.

Once I have the "rail" in place, I then give it a brush with diluted PVA. This hardens it and gets rid of the "hair". Cut off.

But indeed I would be interested in how to make your own railings, specialy fit for a certain ship !!

Kevin: Yes drawings would make things much clearer, t.i.a.

John - I will do something for you. I can actually take a photo of the pieces in situ!

Watch this space - today or tomorrow!

(I'll post it in Tips and Tricks and put a link here)
