Exceptionally clean and precise work!
It is interesting how the Measure 21 Navy Blue shows up differently in different images and different lighting conditions. Don |

Looking back at his previous images, they seem to range between various shades of blue and shades of gray. I think it is one of the characteristics of digital cameras. My own camera has settings that produce similar results. I can get images that seem more like yellow lightbulb or sunshine tone . . . or I can get images with the blue tone like you see in these photos, but not quite as deep blue as these. I think the blue hue is quite attractive on a ship like this one. |

There are various sources of information on line for Navy camouflage. The Wiki article is pretty good, and includes paint chips (results will vary, of course, depending on the computer, the screen, and so on): World War II ship camouflage measures of the United States Navy - Wikipedia
Floating Drydock sells a lot of books, color chip sets, and other resources: Floating Drydock Here is one source of info on Measure 21: Measure 21 And Navy Blue N-5 is shown on this set of color chips: http://www.steelnavy.com/images/chips/USNchip2.jpg All the chips show %-N as a dark blue. Various factors, as you say Mike, will bring out various hues. In any event, Joe's model of Oakland looks great from any angle and in any light. Don |

Been a while. Been working this model heavily ever since but got lazy with posting. Took a break about a month ago and built hulls for both Yahagi and Oyodo (really like these results, post later). Last 2 weeks back on Oakland. At this stage I'm down to, screws, rudder, rails, rigging and flags. Wishfully thinking tomorrow. The 20 mm AA is overscale. I built them then cut them down, still too big, but decided to place them anyway. The twin 40mm are really nice. The front artwork has the radar set on the foward mast, instructions on the aft. I looked through photos and seems when in the blue paint it truely was on the aft mast then moved forward when improved on refit, so aft mast it is. Ship actually carried depth charges on the stern, these two seem a bit overscale but photos clearly show a very cramped stern. Walking around there in peacetime seems dangerous.

Screws and Rudder. Seems 4 bladed screws are easier, not trying to eyeball 120 angels. Put a blade on, do the opposite side then split the difference.

I admire your work on this ship model.
I only attempted building small ships in paper many moons ago, but love them radio controlled ( they ae about 4 ft long ). Isaac

She's finished minus flags and a label for the stand. I'm pleased with the model and recommend it to anyone interested. The only weird flaw is on the ships boats, the "95" is mirrored on one side. The designed mirrored the thing but forgot the letter mirrored too, oh well. The rigging in enough to get good impression but not overly accurate.
