SS Canberra - 1/250 - Sharunas Vilkas
I've not posted much for far too long - time for change!
I have started on the 1/250 SS Canberra, one of the last classic ocean liners, and eventually one of the first modern cruise ships. The model is very generously made available by our very own Sharunas Vilkas. The design thread is at: Ocean liner SS "Canberra" So this is going to be a large, full-hull model.

Brilliant. I'm a bit further in the construction but I know you're much more efficient than me!
I am really enjoying the build so far because everything isn't done for you, ie, the tabs to join the parts aren't actually included on the parts or as parts themselves. I had a little trouble with frame 13 - it doesn't seem to sit down as far as its supposed to. I increased the depth of the slot it engages into which let it drop down enough to get the lines for the 'decks' to line up almost exactly with the lines on the keel. I think you may find the same small problem with the 'bilge keel longitudinals' (best name I can think of! You'll need to cut a slot in them where they engage on the frames. I've fitted the aft decks and first full length deck and the focsle. I had a very slight overhang in some places, I thnk it probably shouldn't but I think I'll only find out when I come to do the skinning next month. Will you build per the kit or add/improve parts? I might get some 1:250 railings and some rigging, I think that would improve it a lot. Isn't Saraunas working on Michelangelo as well?? |

I also have Sharunas' Mauretania on the to-do-pile, looks like a beautiful model as well. I hope he will continue with the Michelangelo, that sure is a beautiful vessel too.

And here are the bulkhead frames. I have printed the frames on 80 grams paper, and then glued on 1mm cardstock with diluted white glue and a little paint roller. Works well, but be careful that the composite sheet doesn't bend while drying.
And I managed to injure my finger today (a mishap with a fresh and sharp scalpel), so that's bound to slow progress down a bit.

Did you use 1.0mm rather than the 1.5mm Sharaunas suggests?
I actually did have that problem with the cars warping - how did you prevent it? Regards, Alan |

Always good to see a picture/model of the great white whale. Looks like the assistant is on the job too, cat nap?

Mike: the big fellow does that whenever he feels like he should be spending time on him rather than the models!
Alan: I tried weighing them down, but then they didn't fully dry, so I've been "unrolling" them very carefully after drying. The 1mm cardstock works fine for me.
