Bit of a high point now that I've finished all four funnels and it's starting to look like its namesake instead of the wreck lying on the floor of the South Atlantic ocean!
I'm really very pleased indeed with how it's turning out, especially as it's so long since I made my last warship, plus it's such a fine looking vessel. I have always felt that the Germans had such a keen sense of how to make their ships look really good, in pretty well all examples from both world wars. Now on to the boats, boat cradles and davits. Incidentally, I recently came across photos of what I believe is the model which started it all for me back in my early teenage years; seems to have turned up in the Royal Navy Museum at Portsmouth; here's the link if you're interested:- Scharnhorst Model Study | R/C Warship Combat Best wishes Chris

Damn, I'm getting even more depressed looking at your work, there is no way in hell my boat is gonna look anything even close to yours, I might as well put a lighter to it right now.

Don't go there Dan, you can't see what I can see close up! From the evidence of your beautiful locomotive it's all going to be just fine - a favourite saying of a professional modelmaker I once knew was "it'll be lovely when it's finished" and in down moments - of which there are many, as hands and eyes that used be much more nimble and sharp no longer are - I always think of this.

Many thanks Mor, it's all quite a bit more detailed than I have been used to on previous warship kits and certainly more than I had bargained for but there isn't any effective way of simplifying it so I'm stuck!
As I have said previously, I think that the rigging will be the most testing aspect of the build and I'm sure that I will be simplifying there, if only to avoid destroying previously completed work. Best wishes Chris

Tricky things, ships' boats; previous experience suggests that kit publishers have great difficulties in designing parts that assemble into objects resembling something other than bananas
 These are pretty good, based on what I've done so far but the hulls still needed trimming at the prow so that the top edge finishes at a little distance below the top of the stem post, rather than suddenly curving up to a point some way above; not too difficult but I always wonder on these occasions whether anyone actually does a trial build before final printing. Two other problems:- the profiles of the intermediate components of the delicate little cradles in the etch set on which these boats rest bear little resemblance to the hull shape of the actual boats, necessitating on-site adjustment to already glued pieces (very horrible) and on the board adjustment to the other set (marginally less horrible); then, when trying to install the boats, the railings around the well deck need trimming/part removal so that the boats can actually be installed; again, not too much fun  I used a length of plastic rod in the cut outs for the keels to ensure that the cradles were in plan alignment. Apart from that, it's all going terribly well! Best wishes Chris

I agree. The cradles usually need adjustment for the boat to fit properly. Mike
