Maersk Line - Sealand Express

This one is for my old friend Jim Krauslis who will probably end up building her at some point as I go flitting off again on my butterfly trip. I rather liked the idea of a civilian model and Jim had this wonderful collection of pictures so I could not resist.

How many containers Squinty ??????

From the pictures I decided she does not have midships bulwarks and uses railings for safety I hope that is right Jim

I have no idea of the scale as yet but it will not be 1/100

Barry --

This is a beautiy, and I'm always glad to see any model you design (and I love to see Jim's little gems), but if you are to design civilian models, I'd sure like to see some of the pre-WWII smaller cargo and passenger ships, like the "dirty British coaster with a salt-caked smokestack. Butting through the Channel in the mad March days."

Of course, this is coming from one who has yet to begin to build your Grumman Albatross or Colossus or . . .

I do like civilian ships, and it's good to see you designing one!

First unroll

The nice thing about this ship is it is a simple(haha) waterline model I am chickening out of the bow bulge this time. This shown by the simple output from Pepakura.

Don I would agree with you the old 3 Island tramp steamers look great and full of character but as always it is what plans are available. I must apologise for not releasing Triumph still. Not sure my draughtmanship is up to liners always liked the Union Castle ships.

The superstructure on this one will require overlays as there are no joins in real life.

Now this will be an interesting subject. Just my opinion here, but we don't often get enough commercial and cargo/container builds in the ships forum.

This should be a simple but attractive vessel to build. Not a bad kit for a beginner or someone looking to grow their skills.

Now I have to ask.... Barry, do you plan to design/model the small fast craft of the Somali pirates as well? Just kidding.

Wotcher, bazzer!

My, you have made great headway with this project!

You are correct, barry, amidships they have rust colored railings, but there is no actual bulwark, save for at the house area (which is apparently combined with the side house fairings) and at the forecastle.

She was rated to carry about 1800 teu (trailer equipment units, equivalent to 20 foot long container), was the first of a number of D-9J class container ships built with diesel power, beginning a trend of diesel powerplants in US flag containerships, in 1980. She was jumboized in 1985, which is the configuration barry is working on. She was also the subject of one of my larger cases, involving a grounding at Capetown, South Africa, during the early morning hours on August 19, 2003. She remained grounded for quite some time, which lead to claims for salvage against my cargo clients.

It's a good representative type of fully containerized ship, something that is rarely found in models, let alone paper models, which is why I requested barry to tackle her. Naturally, I have a good number of photos of her on the ground, and thereafter, so hopefully there is a good deal of detail possible for this model when built.

Thanks again, bazzer, and I look forward to seeing more as she proceeds, but hopefully not keeping you out of the garden too much.

Cheers!
Jim

Always interesting to watch you "designers" at work.
From the first image, it almost looks like one of those oil supertankers.

Container guides

Thanks for the interest. I now a lot more about stacking containers from Jim's emails hopefully he might be persuaded to edit the main points from them and add the lesson here sometime.

I am pretty sure the guides are not quite in the right places even now but Jim will edge them into position for me.

Wotcher, bazzer!

Love it! Just freakin' love it!!

I would be honored to provide you with some help in placing the container fittings on the hatch covers and support pedestals. I'm sure we'll be discussing this shortly by email.

She really looks superb, mate!

Cheers!
Jim

Nice choice, mate. It will be huge at any scale. What does it turn out to be at 1:100?

I noticed on the Halinski page, in a photo of the proto build for San Francisco that they use flower petal design for the bulgey part of the bow. Might tryy that for the hull of this when you decide that you need it.

Personally I would love to see tramp and coastal steamers from the WWI era. Dirty coal belching things going about their hard work.
