Suction dredger Willem van Oranje - 1:250 - Scaldis

This one has been on my to-do pile for years and years - the trailing suction hopper dredger Willem van Oranje by Scaldis Modelclub in scale 1:250. This was Scaldis' 50th published model. Dredging has an important part in Dutch history, and I have a bit of family history here as well.

This will be a challenging model. Lots of fine detail, pipework on deck, and a very complex-looking dredging arm. I will be using the lasercut frames and detail set.

That is a formidable vessel, and it looks like a challenging and complex model (perhaps challenging because it is complex). I will be watching.

Awesome, looking forward to it

How will you display it, like the demo model? a sheet of plexi in an aquarium?

Out of random curiosity decided to plug ship name in to google; found some interesting stuff.
Among the finds:

It was drydocked for maintenance June this year,

The trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) Willem van Oranje arrived recently at Damen yard in Rotterdam to pull both rudders, and to repair the starboard propeller shaft.
According to Damen, all propeller blades have been replaced by new ones.

Dredging services provider Royal Boskalis Westminster N.V. and biofuels producer GoodFuels announced that trailing suction hopper dredger Willem van Oranje will become the world’s first dredging vessel to operate on 100 percent bio-fuel oil.

10 February 2010

Her Majesty the Queen named and launched the trailing suction hopper dredger WILLEM VAN ORANJE on 10 February 2010. The ship is being built for Royal Boskalis Westminster N.V. at the IHC Merwede shipyard in Kinderdijk, The Netherlands.

Boskalis is celebrating its centennial in 2010, and this was the main theme of the naming ceremony. With this in mind, and in order to underline the historical significance of the year, the centennial vessel has been named after the Founder of the House of Oranje Nassau, William of Orange (Willem van Oranje).

The WILLEM VAN ORANJE was designed and is being built by IHC Merwede, in close collaboration with Boskalis. A characteristic feature of the vessel's design is the twin hopper concept. This concept makes it possible to optimise the load of the ship in relation to the draught, particularly in relatively shallow waters. Sustainability is also a major focus of WILLEM VAN ORANJE's design. The ballast water is cleaned before it is pumped overboard. In anticipation of increasingly stringent environmental standards, space has also been left in the funnel to install equipment for the additional cleaning of exhaust fumes.

And then found this website with a number of photos of it; seems website is for sale too if you happen to fancy owning a dredging database,

Some more photos, including while drydocked.
A notable number of sacrificial anodes on the propellor shrouds, too.

And,

A bit of maintenance news, August 2015,

Quote:
Maintenance stop at Damen Shiprepair Amsterdam for necessary dredge pipe modifications ... Besides this main task other jobs needed to be executed, which incorporated hopper doors cleaning, modifications of bulwarks in way of lifeboats, shell damage repairs on aft starboard, anodes renewal and propeller blades renewal with Owner’s supplied new ones.

One special task which was executed during this project involved the fitting of a turtle deflector. Trawlers and dredging vessels working in the Mid-Atlantic Ocean are required to be outfitted with a turtle deflector. This system reduces the chance that turtles are caught in nets or suction pipes.

Knew there are at least a couple members who live there and speak the language but couldn't remember who they were.

Cheers, that's great info and photos!

Rick, the model can also be built as the Gateway, there are extra parts for the bow and stern. I don't think I'll use the plexiglas plate display, because then it won't fit in the display space I have in mind for it.
