Hi all

I realize I am not answering some of your questions. The Polly materials I buy are from Evergreen, they make Polly sheets and pipes (and a lot more) for modelers. They have a huge supply of Polly products mostly for model makers. Just google them. Their delivery is direct and excellent. Those of you (Kurt) who have the 1:250 version of the ship, will probably need to get the actual pipes with a hole in the middle (which they make) unless you make them in the paper. I don't think they make the solid pipes that will work for that scale. Mine, on a 1:400 scale, is solid which makes it easier to bend and manipulate. Yes, there is a technique to bend actual pipes but it’s a bit harder since you need to fill the pipes with wire or something else to get a nice bend.

Talking about the pipes, this is NOT hard at all! The bigger solid Polly pipes bend easily with a small amount of heat. Get some plyers or tweezers to hold the pipe and wave the Polly pipe over a candle and it will bend perfectly and permanently when cool. NOT TOO CLOSE or it will turn to crisp! I do have some very short-length piping that needs to be bent and that will require some heating to shape..
No big deal. I purchased a heat gun and I will try that also otherwise it's the candle!. It’s the pipe supports I have the issue with as you know. I think I have it solved and I will share that shortly.

The Styrofoam arrived today so I think this will really help me with all the paper "box" construction for the deckhouse/superstructure stuff. It's perfect, very fine, and has a much higher density/quality than the average packaging. I can use a sharp knife to cut out the square or round shapes and form the tiny paper around it making it perfect. I hate this stuff because it cannot be recycled, my wife is already on my case about its arrival! Hopefully, I will use all of it!
Need to be a bit careful and experiment with the glues I use with Styrofoam although I really only need it as a 'form' to fold the paper around. It does not work with petroleum and solvents that are some glues.

So, progress, but the pipes are my priority.

Peter

Hi everyone.

I unboxed my heat element "gun" today and tried it out on some of the 2mm pipes. This is a simple electric heat "gun" that focuses its generated heat on a small or large area for Polly products.

It works very well. The low setting just warms up the poly pipes to allow them to bend SLOWLY using my small plyers. Heat and bend a little and repeat! The pics will show how a bigger diameter bend just cracks the pipe of that diameter. If it's heated just a bit it will blend perfectly. As usual for me, I buy stuff to fix these issues. You can use probably use the heat of a candle for the same effect.

So, the smaller fore and aft deck pipes on the higher level of the deck supports are very close together so I will just glue them together and end-to-end. I have the correct diameter sizes in Polly pipes from Evergreen, not the lengths but it's not a problem, I can just add or cut them to fit. They go the whole length of the ship. The bigger oil discharge ones are (2.00m) and are slightly separated and they go to the discharge pipes around midships.

All pipes need to be bent a bit. If you are using Polly pipes then I recommend a heat source for anything higher than 0.6mm solid poly pipes.

Interesting technique with the candle Peter.

I've been away again for a while so just stopping by to catch up and see how you're doing. Its reassuring that the pipes are not so difficult before I start my 1:250 version.

Great job so far, hope you're still with the program!

Regards,
Alan

Great to hear from you, Alan. This is one of the reasons I enjoy this Forum so much. It feels like a family to me. As you may know (I mentioned it earlier) I work for Subaru as a product specialist and salesperson for over 10 years. The entire industry has been turned on its head due to Covid and the lack of computer chips. I, like many of my colleagues in the industry, am the only salespeople with no cars to sell. Can you imagine! So I have to focus my attention on my business for a while.

My Jahre Viking is boxed up and safe and I will get back to it I promise. This is my first paper project, but I do enjoy building plastic kits and modifying the hell out of them with custom LEDs, super paint jobs, etc. I did have time to convert my second bedroom into a proper model work station equipped with a new ergonomic chair, desk, drill press, air generator for airbrush work, ventilated paint booth, and all kinds of other stuff. No complaints from my better half, amazing! I hope to retire in 3 years at 70 so spend the money when you have it!

I hope to be back o the tanker project soon. Meantime thanks again for your interest.
Peter

I forgot to mention a French site builder of the 1/400 scale Jahre Viking. Amazing work. Keeps me focused on the end result.
