I love your images, they look so real!
Anyway, accuracy on this model is probably questionable at best. I used your image and the kit supplied part to show what/where this is. I think the part on top is also a fanciful representation as I couldn't see anything like that in photos. I'm needing photos because the instructions are so vague.... parts too I guess. |

As I said, just grabbing screencaps of the ship in my Port (within the game).
I am able to rotate and view from any angle, and zoom in and out to some degree. Of course, this is all assuming that the CGI Iron Duke is accurate. But based on what I've seen about the research put into the ships in this game, I find it hard to argue with the Game version. I'd expect a round structure is more likely over an elliptical one, so I tend to think the model is inaccurate. The sub structures are also different shape. You are doing the best you can with what you have, and it looks great. Keep going.

The structure is the armoured conning tower. They were often oval in footprint. I think the kit is more accurate than the sim, which looks modernized.

So I went and looked her up in British Battleships and it is her conning tower but the shape is wrong, the shape is more like the sim but neither is accurate.

I have that British Battleships book and it is an absolute crutch for this model. But as you guys have pointed out, with variations in the evidence out there I will forge ahead with kit supplied parts mostly and make amendments where the effort isn’t too great. I love the feed back and it has definitely allowed me to make critical revisions in a model where I don’t know what’s correct. I guess I should post the construction sooner if I’m unsure because you fellas sure have a wealth of knowledge on this.

but nothing close up, focused on this area. In what I've seen, it almost looks like a widened oval with corners. Sort of football/rugby ball shaped. Much like the model design. I looked for blueprints too, but what I found are not large enough to make out these details either. Unless I want to pay for high res copies. I'm no boat 'xpurt, but didn't these ships go through upgrades and changes over the decades? This is a 1914 ship...used right up to WW2...so it could have undergone many changes. The sim model could just be a later version. In fact, I just read, that in WW2 it was used as a Gunnery Training ship including AA training. Maybe additional AA points were added? On the sim model, that front round turret appears to be an AA gun mount (an important element of the game) which would explain why it is a round turret and not an oval obversation area. Just my thoughts.

Heres a detail of very large photo of Iron Duke.
Its different again, but resembles more the paper model design. The photo was published in a book in 1916. Which means it was taken sometime in the two years before that.

I haven't spent much time on the model but I did manage to make the search lights. In lieu of the paper lenses (as seen on the right) I opted to put on clear ones. I scored the surface and ran black marker over it to mimic the Morse code louvres. I painted inside it silver but it doesn't reflect any as I hoped it would.

I also managed to add another layer of superstructure.

The next higher superstructure assembly has a print error. The wooden deck face is to be placed on the upper visible side and the steel gray surface is on the underside like all the other decks. As can be seen in the picture and in comparing with the previous image, they have the outline on the wooden deck matching that of my last superstructure installation which would put this to the underside and the profile of the new cabin, which goes on top, is printed on the steel underside. I will just make a color copy of this deck and cut a section of that copy to past over the visible white space left behind when I mount the cabin on the wood side.
