HMS Iron Duke
I've had this in the collection for over twenty years. Finally decided to give it a try. I am well aware that this kit has fitment issues and errors but I like the subject matter so I'll just deal with the issues as they arise.

As per standard, all skeleton framework gets laminated onto some stiffer board. The white is bristol board which wasn't thick enough so I made that two layers of it. The brown stuff which all the frames went onto was heavier and that was single layer.

Assembly of this was fine with nothing seriously out of place.

Plating the hull is where the first problems showed up. The hull plates are not all the same widths as between the frames where they are to fasten to. Plating starts at the center and works forward and aft. As you progress in one direction or the other there were places where they were too short to bond to the adjacent frame and the further you progress out the more apparent this became. This image shows my 'fix' for it.

At some point you will simply run out of hull plating for the space left to cover. Only thing you can do here is make up a piece to cover the shortfall. I had this at both bow and stern.

Anyway, the lower hull was completed and turned out alright. I did not yet fabricate or mount the skeg or shafts. You can see that I inserted some rigid foam board between the frames. I did this in hopes that I would reduce the pressing in of the hull between the frames from frequent handling of it.

The rigid foam is both above and below the waterline. I think it helps a little.

There is a printing error for the anchor hawse pipes. Deck shows (correctly) two on starboard and one on port. The hull plates have it reversed.
I have made a sub-deck in this area to match that of the finished deck with the purpose of opening up the hawse pipes as opposed to a printed representation. Some wood stiffening was added as well as it provides an additional landing for the hull plating. Furthermore, if this doesn't work I can still revert back to the printed representation. |

I sheathed the hull above the waterline with bristol board. This is heavier than the supplied card stock and should reduce waviness between frame attachments.

The mounting of the secondary guns up forward was gonna be a problem for me because i couldn't decide if I wanted them in a stowed position or ready for action. Swinging them outboard would make them vulnerable to damage as I progress with the build. Only one answer to this, They need to rotate.
I constructed this setup to sandwich the guns and provide a complete assembly for the whole shooting match (pun intended). this worked out great and each gun pivot pin went rigth through and into the rigid foam below. It sits there solidly. |
