SMS Gneisenau at 1/200 from GPM

Well ladies and gentlemen, after completing the Modelik 1/25 CPRR Jupiter it was time to start a new project.
Since I've always been a fan of those pre WW1 battleships I decided to give the SMS Gneisenau a try.

Although most of you already know the cover, I do feel a log without the cover would not be complete :

I don't speak or read Polish, so the instructions are wasted on me, but even if I could read it, it sure doesn't look like much :

But these little instructions are fullowed by not less than 12 pages of 3D rendered pages of the ship in various stages of construction ; very nice but still a bit challenging when the eyes aren't that young anymore :

But here we go, let's hope I can make something at least half decent of this nice kit.

And two mornings of "work" brings us to this :

The German WWI-era armored ships are beautiful to my eye. You are off to great start on this cruiser.

Should be a beautiful kit. As far as reading insructions, doesn t matter. They are all the same basic things like laminating thickness or glue 9 to 10 etc. Pictures and experience are your only really assembly aides.

Some progress has been made to the hull. I didn't have much confidence in my ability to use those cardboard pieces to cover up de underwater part of the hull, so for that reason I am filling the voids with depron that afterwards be sanded nicely into shape.

Even though I was worried about the shape of the stern, the result seems to be OK (at least to my standards).

To be continuied...

And the lasercut details and 3D printed barrels have arrived as well :

Hi Dan, surprised to see that you have the etched set for the Scharnhorst; I would have to say that this probably won't make you very happy! Whilst the two ships are very similar there are so many detail differences between the two that there will be significant misfits and omissions and you will end up having to scratch build some elements.

Two examples are the considerable length of railing around the well deck which doesn't exist on Scharnhorst and the searchlight platforms, ladders and railings to the rear of the bridge which on Scharnhorst are at main deck level between funnels 2 and 3. There will be more I'm sure but if you haven't started cutting the etches I would say that it would definitely be worth swapping the set.

Best wishes

Chris

Thank you for the information Chris, I'll sure try to swap the set if that's possible. I'm not sure why I didn't find the right one though.

Edit : It seems I really can't find the correct set :(
