1/600 Australian light Cruiser HMAS Perth
My next project is the Australian WW2 light cruiser HMAS Perth, as she was when sunk in Sunda Straight in 1942. She was a major unit in the ABDA naval fleet in the opening months of WW2. Following a disastrous daytime surface engagement, HMAS Perth and USS Houston stumbled into a Japanese task force in Sunda Straight at night while attempting to reach Australia. Both were sunk by Japanese cruisers and destroyers.
The waterline kit will be in my usual scale of 1/600. The attached image is of the 3D model that I am creating using TurboCAD. I found that I can save it as an STL file as used in 3D printing, which I can then view in detail using MS 3DBuilder. The model is a work in progress. I have been asked if I would make the STL file available. I won't rule that out, but I would like to know more about how it would be used. My STL files are made specifically for developing a papermodel - some items are simplified, and some would not be printable as they are. Wayne |

Very cool, looking forward to your completed model.
Thank you for filling in the gaps. ps: That reminded me that I have to work more often in my ships! |

The 3D model is pretty well done. I might add some small details later. Next task is to disassemble the 3D model, "explode " each part, lay out the flat pieces and arrange them into the paper model. That could easily take several weeks.

Thank you for the update. Waiting for some weeks after years of waiting is doable!
Best! |

The parts are done and colored. The pics are from my most recent beta build. Now on to the instructions.
There is some disagreement as to the color scheme Perth wore on her last sortie. One version is that the starboard side was camouflaged as shown on my model while the port side was a monochrome dark gray. I opted to mirror the starboard side on the port side. Wayne |

Incidentally, Wayne, if you are going to continue with this theme, just let me say USS Paul Jones, Parrott, Pope, and John D. Ford or, staying with the Java Sea theme, Edsall, Peary, Pillsbury, and Pope.

i have recently uploaded two more sets of drawings to the webarchive that will fit in the context of your american - australian - dutch taskforce project. click on this link for drawings of dd-230 uss paul jones after a 1940 refit in the philippines. found out that uss paul jones was the flagship of desron 29, and i guess the drawings will represent the configuration she was in during the february 1942 naval battles. unfortunately i have no drawings for the other desron 29 clemson class dd's this is a link to drawings for am-35 uss whippoorwill. am-35 was one of the vessels that supported uss langley after being hit by torpedoes. the drawings represent am-35 after a 1923 refit in pearl harbor regarding the paint scheme for hmas perth, found this page via the webarchive, with a statement made by a crew member (in charge of the paint locker) about the february 1942 paint scheme. you'll also find profiles for the november 1941 scheme, and the february 1942 scheme |
