HMS Starling JSC
Hello all,
Off to a flying start with this one. This is a departure from the usual JSC construction in that laser cut base-plate, keel and upper decks are provided as standard; followed by profile boxes for supporting the upper deck and ship sides. This is an innovative build style which allows for very quick building. So, on with the build. I used square rod and clamps to hold the keel square 'till the glue set (about 5 mins). The deck supports followed in quick succession, with tabs folded over the square former to ensure clean bends......... .......followed quickly by the decks Something that needs to be done for a sharp bow is to sand the keel section to a sharp chamfer. I sealed the fore-parts with superglue before sanding. So, a total of about two hours work, including cutting out and attaching the extra doors, most of which won't be seen. Nothing like a kit like this to get the mojo back on track.

JSC makes some of the finest 1/400 scale card ships. their newer designed and redesignerd models are very good. I'm glad to see they are also evolving their build/design process. You're doing a great job on this

Great work, Bernie!
The Modified Black Swans were very beautiful ships to my eye. I am glad JSC has brought out this model of Captain Walker's famous ship and that you are building it. It's sure to be a beauty! Don |

Very nice Bernie.
It seems that you really enjoyed the new method for the hull. Looking forward to your completed model. Ps: and also looking forward to your post-war RN models in 1/400. |

Hello all
JSC have captured the fine lines of this class very well and the new method certainly aids in this. Cmdrted, Don, Tex and Pablo, glad you are ejoying the build. An area to be wary of is the hull sides where the join is. I couldn't get a clean join here and had to place a backing piece to get a flush fit.

So, on with adding some details. The extra doors supplied with the kit were added in the relevant places and some scratch built stuff added to the bridge. I also opened up the gunner's shelter in front of the bridge.
The 4" mountings are very well represented, but I added some small details on the breech end. Gun barrels are 400 scale items in brass from GPM. With various boxes and bridge accoutrements it is starting to come together. The binocular fittings were fashioned from 0.5mm rod and fine solder. Some slight weathering applied with pastel chalks.

i like the fact that detailed parts are printed on decks if you dot want to make the full dettailed version . also there is a lot of double sided printing with this model as well as laser cut decks as standard

Don, many thanks as always, Herky, this kit is a delight with all the new stuff by JSC.
I am in lockdown again (tested positive), but had a good day on the workbench with lots of intense miniature mayhem. I couldn't fold up the very small Oerlikon ammo lockers, so reverted to fabricating from 1mm stuff which were then painted. I did use the printed lids though. Other various lockers were no problem. Plastic rod was used for bollards, dc's and smoke pots, whilst the mushroom vents were from turned bamboo. I managed to get a nice smear of super-glue on the ship's side, but this will sand out and be repainted. So, have a ton of fun with this and cracking on with the funnel deck fitting next. While I was at it, I decided to make the sweep floats from bamboo and card. I found the ones supplied in the laser cut set were just too flat.
