Hello,

The center walls are done. Next step is to construct the ceiling and frames for the sides of the main deck.

Take care,
Kurt

Cutting out the side frames for the car deck takes some patience since there are more than 70. After that, you start gluing them to the bottom of the second deck and filling in the ribs with pieces which need to be cut for each individual location.

Take care,
Kurt

Hello,

The frames are all finished for the sides and ceiling of the car deck. Next step is to turn it over and glue it onto the hull.

Take care,
Kurt

If there was a "most patient modeler" award, you would be a candidate for it (image 2399).
San Mateo is looking good in that second photo.

Thanks!
Believe me, I had considered only putting in every second frame within the middle region. But, I rode this one as a boy and that helped keep me going.

Best regards,
Kurt

Hello,

It took awhile to attach the deck to the hull with all those frames down each side. However, it is done.

The next step is to attach the sides of the car deck. These sides have groups of small window openings from forward to aft which are outlined in light gray on the parts. The individual openings are very small and the "bars" between them thin. Not only do I think it will be very difficult to cut each of these out without tearing the bar off or leaving debris at each corner, but I think the chance of these windows lining up perfectly with all of those side frames, such that no side frames show, is "remote", at best.

Therefore, I decided not to cut out the windows. They appear black in most photos of the San Mateo and other ferry boats. I thought about coloring in the little rectangles with a fine-tip marker but I am sure that would end up kind of messy. Instead, I used MicroSoft "Paint" to draw a 3 x 4 group of rectangles to scale and printed them out, checked the fit, then made adjustments until the size was exactly right to cover the outlines. Next, I simply cut-and-pasted that pattern so there were enough for both sides of the ship, printed them out (on thin paper), and now I'll glue 18 sets into place on each side.

Take care,
Kurt
