Hans Gerd:
I have admired your work as shown on Kartonbau.de for quite a while. Your models are very, very impressive and are some of the best I have seen. Your action photos are wonderful! It occurs to me that this should be another model category in model competitions. Photos such as yours greatly enhance the presentation of well-built models and are much more interesting than static waterbased displays. The waterspouts near the Italian cruiser were great!

Hi folks,
to take such fotos is quite simple when your ship is a waterline model: You need a table with a dark surface, then you crumple plastic wrap and then spread it on the table, you put yor model on and apply white flour with a spoon as the wake. Last you need a background, this can be in the simpliest way whie cardboard, better are posters, pages of calenders, scans or just holyday shots. then you have to decide the angle, from where to take the picture. I prefer black & white pictures, the look more authentic.

Whoa! These are awesome. How do you do the smoke? And the models themselves are excellent. Thank you for sharing these goodies.
BTW, my father's name is also Hans - I have always thought that it is a wonderful name and badly underused in my part of the world. Carl

Super! Thanks for those tips! I never would have guessed you didnt use computer enhancement of some sort. Did you use an additional external light source or just the camera flash?
Gonna have to go on a saran wrap and flour run! Oh wait, I have to make a ship first...... Not my strong suit but maybe its time I try again! Now I know to go waterline for sure  Chris

There is something about card models that when photographed they have a more realistic look about them then plastics. It may be due to the thinness of the card stock that injected molded plastics can not reproduce or perhaps the lack of reflected light off of the surface of the paper. What ever it is these are truly wonderful photos and between your superb photography skills and the superb models you make these constructs come to life.
