USS Monitor

I thought I'd take a break from the BK1124 design to get some work done on my scratch built USS Monitor. I still have some work to do but, the basic structure is complete.

Thanks for the encouraging comments.

The model is 24cm long which brings it in at just over 1/200 scale.
I did not attempt to make it any particular scale. I just tried to make it a pleasing size with the largest pieces fitting on one sheet of 8.5 x 11 inch paper. This just happened to be about 1/200 for the upper deck (which I drew first) so I scaled everything else to that.

The drawings I have found cannot agree as to the height of the various upperdeck fitting, particularly for exhaust and ventilation. So, I went for the cleaner minimalist look.

I just have to finish the rudder, propeller, bollards and insideof the turret. The designs are all done and just require building and fitting.

Turret Progress

I have made some progress on the interior of the turret. The two Dalhgren guns and gun carriages work out to about 50 individual parts. Here it is in super macro mistake mode.

Looks great! Seems you did a good job that super macro was not as unkind as it usually is! Very cool!

B-Manic: Your Monitor looks excellent, particularly the artwork for the plating & rivets, which are very finely done, I think. Along the side, I notice that the gray is darker lower on the hull. Is that because of the waterline? BTW, where did you locate the drawings?

I remember Pyro made a nice Monitor model in plastic years ago. I built it with its companion Merrimac.

To all - Thanks for your kind words.

Phil - I will post the Dalhgren gun and carriage drawings

Greg S. - I have not used anything that would qualify as actual plans. I used drawings and period prints from the internet and a nice Joe Hinds print (links below). The rivet and plate pattern I based on period photos. BTW I really like your builds.
