Ironclad battleship RN ITALIA - 1880 - scale 1:200
Hello to all papermodelers !!!
here a new thread about the building of the paper model of an old Italian battleship of 1880, the RN ITALIA, launched in 1880 and scrapped in 1921. This was the lead ship of the ITALIA class of battleship (Italia and Lepanto) and was equipped with heavy guns 17 inches (432 mm) mounted in an "enchelon" central barbette, plus other guns as secondary and anti-torpedo boats artillery (149 mm, 120 mm, 4.7 mm) more info on Wikipedia on this battleship at : Italian ironclad Italia - Wikipedia Due the ling time to be built (10 years) when she was lauched, was considered a bit "old" for the naval technology at that time.. In any case she had a very striking and peculiar appearance gave by her 6 tall funnels and the central barbette. The mode is based on Heinkel Model production (a very good job, Nando !!!) with the usual high level of design and particulars, typical from this firm. The pics are presenting the model at the actual building status, with the hull completed and started the various superstructures. Will be very interesting the building of the six tall funnels supporting all the flying bridge running from stem to stern directions. Hoping you'll like those pics, I wish you all an happy paper modeling !!! ciao Jp

Thank you for your compliments.
I can only praise your constructions that enhance the quality of the design. No matter the difficulty, the result is always the same: excellent. The designer Nando 1/200 Italian ironclad Italia Paper Model - EcardModels

Very nice photos J.P. This is a “must-follow” thread.
I read this ship had 432mm (17-inch) guns. . . . very large for this era. Could this be true? |

The guns of the Ironclad Duilio were larger. (450)

Hello to all paper modelers !!!
in last weeks I had a bit of spare time for work on the model of the Italian Ironclad RN ITALIA in 1:200 scale. Unfortunately I don't post some intermediate pics between the previous posted status and the actual one... I missed to share with you all a view of an intermediate status and now I post what is actually built. The ship is not yet completed .. as missing components there are still a couple of launches, some Hotchkiss revolving guns, propellers, some stairs, the stand rigging, anchors and chains, a stand for the model and a transparent case... But, looking at the pics of the original ship and checking with some tables of the ship drawn by an old modeler, I found that I must to modify a bit the military mast... the top pole, on the real ship, was not put in front of the upper mast part, but was like an "extrusion" from this ... and so, I have to change this part of the model, putting the upper mast in the right position.. it will be not a simple operation, but I think I'll do it in a reasonable way... Just that is not so simple, anyway, put the fingers to change something that has been already realized... but the life is so.. :-) Anyway, here following some pics of the RN ITALIA at the today's status.. I hope you'll like See you at the next update ! ciao Jp

Impressive work JP. You are the master of “gun barrels”. . . fine craftsmanship with the 432mm guns. The hull is impressive.
This is what makes me a fan of the ships from this era. I will continue to watch this one. Mike |
