RN Duilio

Hello, I just realized I haven't posted any report yet on this forum.
So, to compensate I'll start on what I'm working on at the moment, mind you, I'm a slow builder

The kit :

Modelik's RN Duilio (with the lasercut pieces)

The frames put together :

And this is what I'm doing at this moment, I'm filling the hull with pieces of styropore :

Cheers

This is a really nice looking ship. It is good to see the laser cut frames fit together well. The ones in the kit have some problems. I started this one and got so frustrated with the frames I tossed it in the 'some other day' bin. I look forward to seeing your build progress.

The fit of the frames is ok, but not perfect though, you can't see it on the pictures, and at the moment I don't really care much about it since I'll do a lot of sanding on it... buth they ain't perfect either.

However after a couple of months of doing no modelling whatsoever due to the fact that I used to be a perfectionist, with the result that I got stuck on every model I ever started, I've decided to go for an "overall look" instead

Excellent philosophy.

Mind you, it will take ajustement though, since I'm crossing over from the plastic and wood side :/

Ok, it seems I'll need a different strategy :/
What happened you say ?
Well, I had her complete hull stuffed with styropor, sanded as smooth as possible, and I was rather pleased with the result.
However, since I had my doubts about woodglue holding on the foam, I decided to give her a layer of filler (I had a fresh tube from the DIY) ....
Horror happened ... after a couple of minutes, the foam started to shrink :(
Well, not too dramatically, but enough to ruin the perfectly smooth shape she still had a couple of hours ago.
Oh well, I'll just make a past of soaked-tissue-and-glue, and see if I can give her back her sexy shape.

Dan: I was going to ask about your plans beyond the styropor (and where do you get it?). I was initially envisioning that you'd be using it as frame filler and just papering on top of it so the hull plates are backed, but then wondered about the idea of some kind of filler so you would have a solid surface for painting directly.

I'm interested in following your approach here because I am soon taking delivery of some kits that Papercut had to give up and with the 1/200 hulls, I think I'll need something to buttress the hull plates.
