The dock is modified from a free download at Kartonbau.de. Here's the link to the dock designed by Wilfried Wiczorek. You will probably have to join kartonbau.de to download them, but it's one of the best paper model sites on the internet and they have lots of nice free downloads.

Kartonbau.de home page Kartonbau.de - Alles rund um's Kartonmodell... | Portal

I thought CT's wood pattern looks nicer than the monotone color on the download sheet, so I turned the PDF file into a BMP file using the 123pdftoimage free software. I then made a BMP of CT's deck pattern by just cutting and pasting to make it as large as you want. I then imported the uncolored dock BMP as a new layer (using free paint.net program), and merged the image down onto the wood deck pattern.

WoW! knife! That turns out to be a really good looking little diorama.

Something I like a lot about CT's kits is that they lend themselves so well to a little "bashing" here and there by people with creativity and ability as you show. That awning looks great, and the little dock and gangway really make it click.

The more I look at your pictures the more I like it.

Thomas

Since nature, like dogs, abhors a vacuum, I thought I would throw together a little CSS David to fill the void on the other side of my dock. The David model is from TinPaper Moon Tank Model

That is an awesome diorama. The dock really anchors it as a vignette. heheh

Bad pun, Torakaze. I used to work in Smyrna, TN. It's a small world.

Although a giant CSS David would strike fear into the Union forces, I thought I should shrink it down to a more scale size (lets see, 1/32 scale printed at 12.8% size should yield 1/250 scale.) Hmm, I wonder what Renwal's CSS Hunley would look like in 1/250 scale.

Is this how you were changing colors on Magnus Merck's Albemarle kit too?

Pretty much. I convert the PDF image to a BMP image using 123PDFtoimage. Then I use Paint.Net's color picker tool to get a good gray color (I used the back side of the crew figures). Finally, I use the paint bucket tool to recolor the area I want recolored. You can modify the paint bucket tool to globally change all the same color on the sheet to a different color.

If you have a graphics program that imports PDF files, that would work also. But I'm poor so I have to do with freeware for the time being. Also, doing it one step at a time keeps it straight in my mind on what's being done to the image.

I'm just now finishing up the Albemarle kit. I often wondered why the only Confederate ironclad that was completely covered with iron would be modeled in wood colors. Strange, the first ironclad I downloaded (Albemarle) will be the last one to get done.
