Hi Group,

Here are the first set of pictures of my Santa Maria card model kit. I've covered the upper skins and internal skins with vinyl wood grained contact paper. The kit comes with paints but painting it just didn't look good so I went to the contact paper. There are vertical reinforcement pieces that are applied to the inside and outside upper hull that will break it up some and should make it look pretty good.

The deck is laser etched and a light coat of paint has been applied. The paints came with the kits as did the paint brushes. I've found another website where you can purchase these kits, O firmie - Harbour Hobby . This is a polish company but they accept PayPal. I got my Santa Maria Kit in just one week after sending the funds via PayPal.

Take care,

Bob

Really looking great, Bob!

I'm very much looking forward to seeing more shots of your progress as you continue.

So, how did you find working on the hull of this kit compared to the Bellona? I hope you will revisit that ship model again some day, I'd love to see you build her knowing your superb skills from the wooden ship model builds.

Cheers!
Jim

Bob:

What Jim said. :D

This is not only the start of a great build, but it could be a great example of how to take photos of a build as well!

I too am looking forward to the progress~!

Hi Bob!

Since I grew up with paper models (I am originally from Poland) I can tell you that some of the plans must have been made by vodka-addicts

It is nice to see that a great wood modeller like you didn't got discouraged by his first paper kit! The joy of making a paper model to look like a wooden model or a metal one (planes, cars, ...) is beyond all description! Especially when astonished friends do not want to believe that its paper! :D

Your Santa Maria looks quite good for your second try with this material. Keep on going! Looking forward to see more!

I hope this can cheer you up a little bit:
Here a picture of my first paper sail ship (from the polish model maker 'Maly Modelarz') made together with my brother some 20 years ago.. :o I do not know if you recognize that it is the Santa Maria as well... We decided to keep it as a memory of our failure. And even though it was already obvious during the building process that it is a failure, we decided to finish it in order to see what can go wrong (but we were still small children that time so pretty everything went wrong ).

Regards, RdK

Gentlemen,

I, too, have built wooden plank-on-bulkhead sailing ships and want to try my hand at building one of paper-card. How would any of you recommend starting? I was surprised that you don't actually use the paarts provided in the "kit" but use them as templates on sturdier card. Does anyone have advise?

Thanks!

Bill

Fine model, Bob! Thanks for posting the set of images that show the progress of construction.

RdK - That early model has a lot of charm. Definitely worth saving.
