KNM Thor Heyerdahl - Nansen class frigate, scale 1/200, by...

... paper Modern Naval Warfare.

Ladies&Gents, after one year, I decided to kick off project Nansen final build.

This one will be "classic paper build": no advanced techniques like laser cut, photo etching, polyurethanic foams, fillers, spray or airbrush painting, etc, will be involved. Only water based glue, small amount of acrylic paint (for naked edges) and japanes Olfa knife.

First pix:

Two last pictures show my method for relatively big hull with relatively small number of frames. I combined two methods, well described in this thread:

Dual layer hull skinning technique

First method by Lex require enormous effort in cutting 1mm cardboard:D, and a lot of this cardboard (each frame times three+internal layer), second method by pmbirner can not be used in Nansen above the water line.

Combination of those two is simple and effective.

Stay tuned!

Fantastic! Can't wait to see this one progress. Great subject choice.

Hello STRK,
I will watch with interest, as you build "Thor" with traditional techniques.
The hull looks excellent, straight and clean.

Build update.

Today I was working on hull-plating above the waterline.
As You can see on this picture, starboard side is made of one large element, (consisting of four parts and a hawse-hole (is this proper term?) ). Unfortunately, working with such a large piece of paper is too difficult:

All joints are reinforced with thin paper (80g) stripes:

To make the build easier, I decided to change the method for the port side:

Two (of four) parts are glued together and glued to the hull - the rest will be fitted to those two.

Next step is hull-plating below the waterline.

Underwater part of the hull is all black.
Torturing my printer is economically groundless, also printing a number of elements of the same color on a one sheet of paper causes its deformation.

I decided to use sheets of black paper, but since no home printer can print white on black surfaces, I had to take different means:

-sheet of black paper
-sheet of white office paper with printed elements
-3M remount spray glue

White paper sprayed with 3M behaves like typical yellow sicky note:

Final effect is so obvious, that no further pix are necessary :D.

Again, simple and effecitve.

Here's sequence "how to determine symmetry marking and other lines on a black piece of hull skin":

first:

-on printed side puncture all necessary points with a needle:

-turn over and draw a line (with a pencil) through punctures:

-turn over, cut out to get desired shape, and turn over again to take a picture:D:

Each elemnt of the underwater part of the hull is a little bit wider. Modeler must trim them to provide proper fit on the waterline:

This method can give very good results:

Joints are almost invisible.

This is how it looks:

Next elements are:

-sonar radome (bulbous bow)
-shafts
-bilge keels
-rudders

After this, superstructures and other details.
