Smile PBY-5 Catalina "Arara" Repaint 1/100 scale

Friends

I present my first model completed in the year 2010. This is my second repaint commercial (the first was the NIE 21 in the colors of the Brazilian Army), this time it's a classic Aerobot: the PBY-5 Catalina flying boat the most widely produced throughout history.

The version chosen was one of the first Catalinas operated by FAB when Brazil entered the Second World War, this piece in particular Catalina No. 2 sank the U Boot Type IXC "U-199 " on the coast of Rio de Janeiro, in a joint operation with a Martin Mariner of VP 74 on July 31, 1943. The U.S. Navy PBM badly damaged the submarine sailed almost no possibility of submersion, the Catalina FAB attacked with the sun in the back throwing three deep charge bombs hitting and sinking the submarine, only 12 crew survived.

Images from U-199 agony taken from a US Navy VP 74 PBM. The Mariner crew show the FAB strike...

After the Brazilian government made a great civic ceremony named the PBY's "Arará" in honor of one of the vessels of Brazilian Merchant Marine sunk off the coast of Brazil in 1942 by U-507, in the same ceremony was painted on the tail the legend "Doado ŕ F.A.B. pelo povo carioca" - Donated to FAB from carioca people. (carioca is a slang word to designated people born in Rio de Janeiro city.)

Typical of Vargas state, not the people who donated, but the United States by the law of Lend Lease.

The pilot of the PBY was Lt. Carlos Alberto Torres to fly after the First Group of Fighter Aviation from stab wounds in Italy flying over 100 missions, ground attack with P-47, but that's another story for another repaint ...

The model is one of Marek Classics on the scale 1 / 50 I bought at the store of Mr. Wayne, there are two or three years ago, it was repainted with Corel Draw X3, the colors were corrected from the original, and added the markings of the FAB model.

The assembly was made in the scale 1 / 100.

The last pic: With other aircraft types operated by FAB in anti-submarine patrols. (FW-58 and Vultee V-11).

For those who want to acquire this small and curious piece of history of Anti-Submarine Warfare in the Atlantic, I inform you that this model will soon be available in ecardmodels.com

Cheers!!!:D

Very nice....the father of a friend of mine flew them in the USN Reserve following the war. He said that they "took off at 100 knots, cruised at 100 knots and landed at 100 knots". A great model of a great aircraft.
