Conestoga/Prairie Schooner/Covered wagon.

Making of the wheel jig. This jig is a little different than the one for the other carriages and wagons. I usually make a disk retainer for the spokes. This time I am going to try a solid hub, but that is for another post.

Still working on the wheels. I have the rear ones yet to do. they seem to be a little time consuming but the hardest part are the wheel and actually the easiest, just repetitious.

In this part of the wheels I used clamps to hold the edges down to give the spokes a slight curve inward. Before I used circles to retain the spokes but with this method the wheels are more solid.

Next posting will be the painting and hopefully the rear wheels. I can't do the brakes until the rear wheels are in place so as to measure the distance from the brakes to the wheels and the alignment of the wheel and the brakes.

I am slowing down on the build but the wagon is coming out rather well. With each wagon I build, they seem to get better. Maybe I should have left the Stage Coach for last, it would have been a home run with the experience learn from each one.

The basic colors of the Wagons West, was a Blue Body and Red undercarriage. I used the clamps to hold the outside rim colored in gunmetal in place while the glue dries.

The front hitch/tongue is removable and also pivotal. There are a few details more to come, with the canvas cover for last. I will probably use a solid paper towel without designs for that. I do not have no schematics on the brake system so I may have to improvise in the design.

It is a beautiful model!

Any chance of your traveling up to northern Virginia next month to show these splendid models off at the IPMC?

I missed the posting for the IPMC, or read it and forgot about it. I am waiting on a short contract here at Ft, Bragg in October but the date is not set yet. When is the show scheduled for.

It's 23-25 October near Dulles (and the nearby branch of the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum with all of its glorious exhibits).

See: 2009 International Paper Model Convention especially Posts 42 and 48

and International Paper Model Convention

We'd love to see you there, as well as at the Army Heritage Day in Carlisle next May: 16 May 2009 Army Heritage Day Paper Modelers' Display

Just beautiful!

I had no idea Conestogas were often painted blue and red! Can't wait to see what color the canopies were ... I half expect you'll be telling us they were chartreuse or lavender.

The canopies or canvas top was a regular heavy cotton tarp. Here is a picture of a restored wagon.
