Where is the backup folder?

I'm using Corel Draw 12 running windows XP. I was working along when a dialog box pops up saying the application has become unstable and will close "Do you want to save your work to a backup folder?". Of course I clicked yes. But I have no clue where that backup folder is. Corel creates backup files in the same folder as the original file and I have checked those and they are not it. A search for backup in windows explorer yielded no results.

Anyone know where that backup folder might be located?

I lost a lot of work when it went down. Not catastrophic by any means but it was most of a days worth. Worth at least a few mumbled curses.

Thanks.

Dang that sucks Will.

Was doing a Google search to hopefully help find an answer, but only found the same as you did, saves to same folder of original file.

However, I did find this one mention of someone doing a windows search on their computer with this search phrase (without quotes) "backup_of_" or event try "AUTOBACKUP_OF_".

And another mention of possible folder locations:
1) /Programs/Corel/Programs/Draw folder
2) {main drive, typically C:}:\Documents and Settings\[user]\Local Settings\Temp\XXX.cdr

Thanks for the suggestions Robert. Unfortunately none of those suggestions bore fruit. Fortunately some of the work was saved in the form of PDF's that i sent to you tonight so not all that work is lost. But it still means I have to compile it all and then reconstruct the lost work.

The backup folder lable itself may well be ***folder name BK*** or similar, without the *'s.

If so, then either in Temp folders or in recent docs folder would be logical locations, but only til such time as the next reboot of the computer. And that timeframe in turn depends on the Temp folder setting of how long a given folder or doc within it is retained.

I'm sorry I can't be of more help, but at times I've struggled with the same issue, though with writing rather than 3d work.

I wish you every success in recovering the relevant folders and files.

Kind and Respectful Regards, Uyraell.

Try going to the C-drive, open it and then choose the folder called "program files".

Browse to the folder for your type of prgram and then open it looking for autosave or the backup file extensions.

Sometimes you have to rename the file with the correct file extension.

You can redirect the saves to another folder of your choice, usually preferences or tools allow you to do this.

Sometimes they are in the temporary folder as well.

Sometimes programs let you choose where backup files go. I don't know anything about coreldraw, but somewhere in the preferences should be an option to back up files to such and such folder. If you can find that setting, you should be able to see where it went.

Try doing a wildcard search on the date that this happened on your entire harddrive. This should show you all files that were created on that date. If you don't see it , I guess your doomed. I always use this method when I get lost in the Gigs of Data.

My backup files for CorelDraw 12 are saved to the folder I save the Corel file. The backup file has the filename of, "Backup_of_xxxxxx.cdr" where the xxxxxx is the original save filename.

I would think a search of your drive for all cdr files should show something.

Best Regards,
