Selection tool question

When trying to install software on my new desktop computer, I discovered that Adobe has apparently taken down the server that activates its CS2 software suite. Now being on retirement income, upgrading to Photoshop CS6, much less the entire graphics suite, is out of the question. My question to the group: is there another bitmap image editor available that has a selection tool that works like Photoshop's polygonal selection tool? (By that, I mean an area selection tool the user defines by 'pointing and clicking' on the corners of the polygon corners.)

I think Gimp has that method, Paint.net does not.

I use Gimp quite a bit, but I don't recall seeing that exact functionallity in it. It is quite easy to freehand select. Best of all, Gimp is free.

Hope this helps!

Thanks, guys. This helps. On doing some checking, it looks like photoshop elements also has the polygonal selection, but having it in Paintshop makes it worth the upgrade from my X3 version....and will put an end from my having to switch between PS and PSP whenever I want to use the straighten tool.

Darwin, check out this page Adobe - CS2 Downloads

It's for those who bought CS2 but can't register, gives you the serial numbers for the whole suite. Not sure if you need to download those installs to use the serial numbers or if you can just use the serial number on the install you have.
The photoshop CS2 download is 300+Mb btw

codex, THANK YOU!!!! Looks as if I will be spending some time downloading. Windows 7 Pro does just fine running CS2, and my skill set still hasn't challenged the CS2 capabilities. For about the first time ever, I find myself hoping I get outbid on eBay for CS5. I hazard a guess that the downloads will be needed, since the original installs are going to look for an initiation signal from Adobe.

Ah, glad to help.
Still run photoshop 6 myself, CS2 (photoshop 9) only has a few more tricks that are useful to me, besides they changed the airbrush icon and I can never find it.

Darwin,

In the help menu on the Adobe CS2 suite there is an activation transfer function. I have never had to use it but perhaps it will allow you to set CS2 up on a new machine. Also you may have to run the utility before you reload the program on the new machine perhaps that is why the Adobe server will allow you to register the reloaded program. I'm curious to know how this works out for you since I also have the CS2 suite and I am thinking about getting a new computer.
