claims to be an AutoCAD LT work-alike, is free, and appears to have a reasonable graphics capability.
Might save a step for you.

Doublecad is a fine piece of CAD lite software, I still have V3 Pro. I know the folk who make it and they are a decent bunch.

I have used Blender and has a steep learning curve. You can try Blender For Artists.

I also use Inkscape. Very easy to use.
