FGMM Panavia Tornado

Just so I have a presence in this contest, I began building the FG Panavia Tornedo last weekend at our Paper Modelers' Army Heritage Days display. The photos below show the progress of Sunday morning. I doubt that I will have time to work on it before Lil and I leave for France, where I am giving a paper on Army Amphibious Operations at a Korean War history conference. However, it's such a simple model that I hope to be able to finish it between the time we return and the end of the contest.

Incidentally, I'm curious about the color and markings. The aircraft has no numbers, but it is in the colors of No. 229 Operational Conversion Unit (crossed sword and torch on the vertical stabilizer, yellow and red squadron colors on the fuselage). I have never seen a 229 OCU Tornado in Desert Pink. They seemed to mostly be in overall light gray. Can one of the markings mavens enlighten me?

Don

It's good to see you back at it, Don. Just remember... Do not pack your xacto knife in your carry on bag to France. You'd have a hard time explaining to security that its for paper modeling.

Nice start Don. It looks really good. I hope you get to finish it.

A business trip to France - now that's what I call a jolly. The best I can manage is 4 days in Halifax, NS next week.

Don, from what i have managed to find out, 229 OCU Tornado's are overall various shades of grey, as they are the F3 air defence variant, not the GR3/4 strike aircraft.

Best wishes
Mick

P.S> as far as i am aware the desert pink scheme was not applied to fighter aircraft, only strike types.

Many thanks, Mick. I will proceed with the imaginary Desert Pink airplane. Maybe someday there will be a repaint that will also add specific aircraft markings (serial and unit ID) and the fin flash.

Very nice on your Tornado, Don!!

And have a great time in France... Are you going to do a conference on some of your researches?

I'd be glad to be there and hear from you one of your amazing stories! But France is still in the future for me.
