I built the canopy next, but didn't like the looks of it at all :(. The aft profile looks nothing like a Dauntless canopy. It should flow smoothly down into the fuselage, but as designed, this one drops off abruptly like the canopy on a Texan. I decided I just can't use it as is, and since I can't modify the canopy (stock build), I'm going to section it and use the 2D pilot and rear gunner figures provided with the kit. This is one of the stock build options. I double side printed the canopy so it won't be white on the inside. The figures are cartoony (classic Fiddler's Green), but I tried to improve them a bit by using Obi's layering method to build them up for a more 3D look. Came out OK I guess.

Moving on to the propeller next.

Wow, you truly have shown what can be done with the older FG kits. The layering method worked out well for the crew, I hope Obi sees them as they do justice to his technique.

She looks great.

Don, I gotta agree Stephen. Those crew turned out exceptionally well for the FG standard! Well Done.

This is outstanding, Don! I really like the way you dealt with the canopy problem. Even with the close up lens, your figures look really good, especially the rear gunner with the twin fifties. I am saving every word and picture for my own attempt. Hope mine turns out a fraction as good as this super Speedy 5.

By the way, does your instruction sheet identify the airplane as an "SBF"? Mine does.

Thanks for all the kind comments fellas. I've got to admit I was kinda bummed when I couldn't use the full canopy, but you're making feel better about it. The cartoony figures aren't really my style, but I did the best I could with the situation. The figures are 5 layers thick: the central layer is laminated to 1mm cardboard, the next 2 pairs of layers are all laminated to 0.5mm cardboard. Yes Don, my instructions say SBF too. Must've been a missed typo. Easy enough to do since the F and D keys are right next to each other.

As I am sure you know, Don, there actually was an SBF, looking something between an FF-1 (or SF-1) and an elongated F3F (http://www.aerofiles.com/grum-xsbf1.jpg). Sure would love to have FG come out with one of those! After they do the updated redraw of the SBD, of course!

Don II

PS: Thanks for the info on the card thicknesses for your crew figures.

It's amazing how good your work looks, Don. When I did the SBD some years ago I couldn't make it look right, at all. And the figures are a hoot.

I really like the work you did on the cockpit with the crew.

Have to agree with everyone else Don, masterful work here. Hard to believe this is an older FG kit. The canopy and figures are really effective.

Ditto. Absolutely incredible how you made this old FG kit stand out. The crew add a nice touch. Well done!
