FGMM Portland Head Lighthouse (stock)

Hi all:

I have been in a real modeling slump for the past 6 months, but last weekend I printed out this FG model of the Portland Head Lighthouse in Portland Maine, and forced myself to build it. I have been meaning to build it since we visited it last summer. Hopefully this will break me out of my paper modeling dolderums.

Its all stock with the exception of the little pointy bit on the top and the round ball underneath it. I havent glued it down to the base yet, as I dont know if I want to use the stock base it comes with. It is the smaller version (not sure of the exact scale) and took a little bit more than a couple hours over two nights to complete.

Nuthin fancy, but I think its kinda cute!

Thanks guys.

Chip- of course you may use it! I would be honored.

Here is a base a made up for it last week. I had some of this Scultpy putty stuff lying around for years so decided to try it out. Got a wood base from the local craft store and painted it brown, then pounded the Sculpty onto it until it looked right, baked it till it was hard, then painted it green and finally sprayed glue onto it and sprinkled it with crushed basil leaves. Looks pretty good- the basil is really too large to look like grass, but I can see how doing the same thing for a larger scaled model would look great.

Apologies for not weighing in earlier. The is a great little model, a real beauty.

I like the FG lighthouses and eventually hope to build more of them. Hope mine come out half as good as yours. I appreciate the hints on the landscaping. Wonder how orgegano would work?

Nice work on the base! Just be careful, the basil (and oregano) will dry up and get brittle, potentially making a mess. If the model isn't glued down you may think about spraying it with a clear sealer to prevent it.

Personally, for a couple bucks I'd pick up some of the rubber grass "sand" made for train layouts - same procedure but the grass will be smaller and look proper to scale, and not fall apart later. Just a thought, but your idea was some nice work with what was available.

Nice Tim, does it smell good too?:p ( You know when we go to the coast this time of year it is fun to see the lighthouses that Chip has in the set)

Great Idea going through the spice cabnet...I never thought of that. I'll have to keep that in mind for future projects....

Don just stay away from the catnip....You don't want to give Tora Chan any ideas.
