Parts Bin

Forgive me if this has already been discussed but I tried a search and nothing came up so I was wondering if we're going to have something like we did on the old forum where we could upload models if we wanted to share them?

The upload size limit for .zip and .pdf would have to be significantly increased.
The other site had an effective limit of about 1M for pdfs and zips - this was too small for many models. I can remember the time it took to get the files down to uploadable size when the Smartgroups files were retrieved. I've still got some Ed Bertschy models looking for a home - they are about 2M.

Regards,

Charlie

problem with CM was, i bumped the file size up about 9.5 megs, but the Hosting Co put a cap on their end for 2.5 megs

so that was the problem we were running into there

Ok Folks

Now for the Interactive Part of the Show.

Jason and I would like to know how we should handle the files section.

Do we post them on a separate site, off site from here, similar to a Dog Pile or Tucows?

Or

Do we create a section in the forums where we can post the files, like what was done over at CM?

Or

Is there some other way to host the files that either one of us is overlooking.

We want to make this user friendly, easy to navigate, fast to download, not alot of hurdles to jump to upload.

We got the forum up and running, so we want to tackle the next goal, the Contributor Crate(Thanks B-Manic), but more so now, we need your help with this one

Rick

You could upload up to 9.5 mb on cm if you loaded it from another site as opposed to uploading from your pc

I will put some thought into the issue....

Difficult to answer Rick, without knowing how much bandwidth and storage you have available and how it might affect the rest of the forum.

I'd also suggest that all uploaded files are vetted manually before you allow downloads of them. That would stop anything malicious from getting through or from crashing the site.

Personally I like the way that www.kartonmodell-forum.org handle thier files section. Maybe we could have something similar to that??.

Best Regards,
Julian (Fozzy The Bear)

any and all security measures would be in place, we already decided no .exe files would be allowed to be uploaded

Jason can answer the space question better than me

I'd be willing to bet the issues with Peter's site were primarily due to storage due to files and attachemnts. So I vote for a reliable off-site host. I can't recommend one, though. I host my own stuff...

I am afraid, the diffcult word will be "reliable". I remember that several server "forget" the data soon or later, or are not able to be connected some time.
I would vote for an own forum-server, if possible.
Just my 2 cents....
Frank
