By the way...this forum has always had the "Rate this Thread" option
(top right of the thread)
which in many ways is similar to a "like" button.

Actually, its better since it gives you more options,
including the option to "dislike" the thread.

As more votes are cast, the "star" rating will change for the thread.
(I just cast a vote giving the thread a 5 star rating)

But, its not something that most people know about
or care to bother with.
And it applies to the thread in its entirety...not individual posts.

I think the like button is a good idea, My variation is that when the viewer clicks on the like button it takes them to a form which asks them to say why they like the thread, But it's optional (it doesn't have to be long, just a sentence) and if they click the dislike button they also go to the form and if they want to they can say why the clicked it.
Also there can be a third button which includes the thanks button.

Leave it with comments rather then buttons.

Comments are personal.

Comments are interesting.

Comments often lead to other things.

Hello,

Interesting. I cannot think of any of the major card modeling (PM, Kartonbau, Kartonist, Konradus, off the top of my head) sites that have this "feature".

So rather than simply comment, the user clicks a button and comments?

Basically a person will get comments or they won't depending upon the other members. See here: The Psychology of Online Forums - Yahoo! Voices - voices.yahoo.com Having been on line since the mid 90's I have seen that behavior many, many times. I would say that most of us post out of a passion for creativity and a love for the hobby, rather than any desire to gain praise.

Like is great for Facebook. I would not use it here. For me, when I comment on something its because it moved me in some fashion or I have something (I think anyway ) to contribute to the conversation. The views tell the story.

Regards,

Cris

Hello all,

in my opinion a "like button", or "kudos" as used in other fora, isn't necessary at all.

Why? We have the "hits". With the hits for frequenting a thread you can calculate the hits per post, and this shows roughly how many people are interested for this thread. Some of the most interesting, for example, building reports (here or in other foreign fora) have a high number of hits per post, but not many comments.

And every member who opened a thread must'n go to depression if he realizes, that he hasn't a lot of hits per post. In that hobby you also have niches in topics, which are only interesting a few of us (and our community is in fact only a small one compared, let's say, to the plastics or RC-fans).

Every hit is a neutral signal, not more, but not less, too.

Greetings peaceglue

lol you named three forums.

I am a member of roughly 40-60 different forums.
I actively post on at least half of those.

There are probably MILLIONS of Forums (Message Boards) on the net.
And yes...a considerable number use "Thankyou" buttons.

I was just commenting on the general use of the button on Message Boards like this one
...but not necessarily related message boards (ie Paper Modeling)

...

I agree with Hi-Torque and other opinions so far, that comments, critiques, opinions
and even just friendly banter, is more appealing and productive than clicking a "like" button.

However I can see the point to an easy way of acknowledging a post
instead of having to write a reply.
500 people might "view" a post...100 people actually read through and
get something from the post...but only 20 actually take the time to
post a reply.
It would be cool to see 90 "Thanks" and get a better idea of who you are reaching.

That's was the reason for my post, nothing else. I feel sometimes a good job for a member just get 3 o 4 post when maybe 30 or 40 people likes it.
In order to avoid all the other problems I think we need just the positive one and without any global counter about how many times you thanked or whatever.
