Do you know any tips to do that to do any solid looks like torus ? The car will be in 1:12 scale. I don't want to use any small plastic pipe to do that just paper and glue. 1/12 should be big enough to offer you with a number of options.
Even the smallest of steering wheels would give a disc of about 1" at 1/12th. A 1902 automobile probably had a 16"/18" steering wheel? one idea, would be the same method as some use for tires/wheels... laminate card or cardstock to the desired thickness. (you could laminate discs and cut out the necessary center areas or precut the layers inside and out before lamination) then cut, sand and file the lamination into a rounded shape. outer sanding would be easy, even with a drill or rotating sanding method. inside shaping would be a little trickier, but patience would net results. white/pva glues provide strength and rigidity, can be sanded and shaped and can provide you with a smooth almost glossy finish. (coat your parts before or during and definately after)

IMO, you can make an exception for the steering wheel and use isolation from cabels, it will look much better and will save you a lot of time and "emotions" :D I used isolation for my Delorean http://www.kartonbau.de/wbb2/attachm...hmentid=233997 http://www.kartonbau.de/wbb2/attachm...hmentid=233998 Sergey |

Try rolling a paper tube around a thin wire, moisten it a bit and then bend it into a circle.

A simple tube, bent into a ring, will probably kink visibly. What I would suggest is you build a former of the shape you want, and build up the tube effect by spiralling a strip of paper around it, in this manner:
Saturn V Launch Escape System (I hope the link works, it's the first one I've posted)

The link Kiefer posted offers tutorial in which you take a piece of wire, roll a thin paper strip spirally around it, moisten the paper spiral couple of times with dilluted PVA glue (with the wire inside). Then let it dry thoroughly, take the wire away, cut to desired lenght, moisten the tube inside with glue (with medical syringe and thin needle), bend it to a ring shape over a tube or stick of your choice and glue the ends together. Download the tutorial of the ring here, it has many usefull tips.

Kiefer's post does sound interesting...I will be taking a look at that!
and just to clarify, Foxbat's post confused me at first... until I figured out what he had meant to say. He used a length of wire "insulation". Obviously he removed the plastic tube wrapping from some electrical wire and formed it into a circle.

my English is not so good, sorry first I should check the word in dictionary... P.S. for me "insulation" sounds like... mmmm.... taking some medicines... I know, it's weird...:D Last edited by Foxbat; 11-05-2010 at 12:00 PM. |
