Inkscape shapes! HELP!

OK this is seriously making me angry..... I dont get angry at software often.....

I cant draw a STUPID SHAPE

Everytime I draw a shape it comes up as a stupid blank box with the drag handles - I cant get it to actually make the shape. What the bejeepers am I doing wrong. The tutorial make it sound like what I am doing is right but in NEVER draws an actual shape.

OK! Figured out the problem but cant figure out the fix - every shape I draw my opacity changes to 0 (zero) I cant get it to default to 100

After you draw it, change its opacity to 100 while it's still selected. The next one should have full opacity. Or you could go into preferences and change the shape tool's colors permanently - but then it will go back to whatever the default color is every time.
BTW, do you use Inkscape for model design? Just curious.
