printing models that were ment for a4 paper?

Hi just getting back into paper models, and alot of the free models on different sites are for a4 paper, i live in the usa and i dont know if you can just print these models on regluar 8-1/2 by 11 paper ive looked on the site here and cant find a answer. Thanks Eric.

i may be completly wrong here but anyways ....

A4 is approx 8.26"x11.6" so if you printing a model that was supposed to be for A4 you are printing it at a slight reduction in scale ...as far as im aware that should not be a problem as ive done the opposite many times before.printed a model based on u.s letter size onto A4.

Well you have a couple of options.

1. open the file in your favorite PDF reader (is use FoxIt Reader) set the print out for 100% then go through each page to see if all the parts fit within the print margins (if they are just slightly outside you can try setting your printer to borderless printing, if your printer supports this option, then check again).
2. you can print them at a smaller scale *do not select fit to page* this will produce different scaling between pages
3. you can have the model printed at Kinkos or Staples etc.
4. you can convert the pages to JPGs (PDFill PDF Tools free) then use GIMP to cut out the parts that do not fit and paste them to a new page(s) ensuring the new page is the right size and resolution

Those are some options there may be others . . .

I use legal size card stock 8.5"X 14" It can be purchased at www.lcipaper.com
under specialty paper. I use the LCI brand although they have many other
brands to chose from.....Ron

A. Convince the United States to accept the same standards as the rest of the world, or

B. Conquer the world and enforce the US standard on all those primitive natives.

Any other choice just delays the inevitable. But maybe I'm taking too much of the long-term view.

you know, I think I'll just keep modifying the models in Photoshop or Illustrator and then printing them out ($19 - 30 for 50 sheets....).

I get 9" x 12" medium weight tagboard from Officeworld.com and trim it down to A4 size.

In the Select Manufacturer slot pick Pacon.
Then choose Paper
Then choose Art & Drating Materials
Then on page 2 choose Tagboard
There are manilla and white available so make sure you order the white.

The medium weight tagboard is around the same as 65lb (cover) cardstock or 177gsm.


The heavy weight stuff is around 252gsm or 93 lb cover and 140 lb index. It goes through my printer most of the time, but sometimes there is a problem. It is probably just a few fractions of a mm too thick to work all of the time.

The 110 lb cardstock refered to a lot in the forum is 199 gsm or 110 lb index

I have been using Wausau brand cardstock for a while. You could get 250 count legal size starting from around $10 from amazon. 65, 90 and 110 lbs are available. A4 size will fit in it.
