wow this is interesting stuff Mike.
I wish I could see those printed sheets in person
and see the ink colours.
They look great in your earlier photos.

I was very curious about the finish on the Apollo craft.
Its interesting how the capsule (Command Module) is quite smooth
and highly polished. Very mirrorlike.
And yet, the rest of the Service Module is dull, and non-reflective.

Obviously you would need to use two different types of paper finish
to simulate the look?

Hi Dave,

Yes, I've tried different papers for this look. The closest is using the silver metallic for the Apollo and the Chrome gloss for the CSM.

Still, it is not perfect, but as close as possible with alll of the different papers I've tried. Just need to figure a way to get a chrome look before printing...

Yes, good question. The CM upper surfaces were covered with strips of aluminum coated Mylar (there is a more technical name, but Mylar is close enough). The aluminum was highly polished hence the chrome look. This was a form of solar radiation shielding. The SM was painted aluminum colored coating.

Most flat aluminum colored paper should work for the SM. I guess the challenge is finding a good chrome or mirror-finish coated paper for the CM.

Mike,
Thank you for the tip - Metallic Pearl is the one!
Just right amount of sheen to hint on the metal underneath, but no glare and excellent colors!

Has anybody tried these these offerings from Moab?
Slickrock Metallic - Moab by Legion Paper

They are both heavweight photo papers at 260gsm and 300gsm for the silver.

Just bought 3 of the sample packs of the Simply Elegant Metallic photo paper, have a special project planned for them (special holiday project).

Now considering getting some of the Moab Silver and Peral to try. Hoping someone has used them, they are expensive!

Macro Setting Closeups

Per 3Turner's request for some closeups, here is a redo of the above print result photos. I don't have the best camera, so these look grainy and the color of the photo paper doesn't look correct as shown in the above photos.

Tried to take these in the same spot, but a couple were rotated it looks like (macro really magnifies any mistakes in placement of the sheet).

I had to crop the end result, the Pure Silver and Pure Gold were twice as big Mbyte wise, while the pure Chrome was less than the Index photo Mbyte size.

Index (Standard for Comparison)

Chrome

Pearl

Moonglow (color of paper difficult to determine)

Pure Gold

Pure Silver

Don't know if these work to show the real look that the eye sees, but here they are! Near the top of each photo is a black line, just before the gray. Notice that the index looks different (not black looking) while a few of the sample shots show it as blue. Like I said the camera isn't the best.

Many thanks Mike!

You did a good job there . I can see the differences. I like the saturation more on the pearl, but the textureless look of the chrome. I don't much like the flakes in the moonglow, gold or silver.

Yes, the Pearl is the best looking for color, Chrome is a very close second.

The Moon Glow and Pure Silver/Gold have different qualities that can be used as well. The Pure silver from a distance makes real shiny parts possible.

Using a lite gray color takes some of the "metal Flake" look away from the silver, hopefully this will work for a very shiny Atlas (1/12 scale).

The 1/32 Scale Saturn V has a Apollo made from the Pure Silver, and the CSM using the Chrome. The combination looks better than the Index cardstock one!

I emailed the maker of the MOAB Slickrock Sliver to see if it is possible to get a sample of it and the Pearl instead of the whole sample pack.

They want $25.95 for a sample pack (2-sheets of many different types) + $26 shipping to Alaska for 4-sheets of usuable test material. I don't plan to test their other samples...

Moab Slickrock Metallic Silver 300gsm

Well, just got some sample sheets of the Moab Slickrock Metallic Silver.

Very impressive stuff. Looks almost like polished aluminum (slight blue hue to it).

Printed colors are awesome looking. All the colors are shiny! Ink dries fast and no smearing.

Biggest problem? Two out of three printers could not handle it. Super heavyweight at 300gsm! Only my heavyduty HP 120 wideformat would feed it. Epson 300 choked and so did my HP1220c.

Here is a closeup photo of the test print.
Color Testing Metallic Paper-copy-moab-slickrock-metallic-silver.jpg

Asked for some sample sheets from Legion Paper. They sent two sheets for free.

That means there is a sheet to use for printing the Apollo CSM, this print will be compared to my previous tries once it is done. Will show photos and how it handles glue in a future post.

Very interesting stuff!!

Hello,

Thanks for all of the interesting info on papers.

Another technique you can use for metallic finishes is to airbrush the full sheet prior to printing. This is (relatively) inexpensive and gives you ultimate control over color tone, etc.

Regards,

Cris
