Wire Rope?

I'm starting a new project that requires a fair amount of wire rope.
I want to use something that is flexible enough so that it can be easily wrapped around a cylinder and looks convincing like an actual cable.

Any suggestions?

I have some wire rope that fits your description, I found it in a small "picture hanging" kit, there's a bunch of small brass hooks and nails etc and a length of wire rope.

I found it in what you'd call a "$1 store" for a couple of bucks.

Yes, that's a good option that I have already considered. However I am still looking for someting that's a bit more flexible. Hummmm I wonder if that wire could be annealed to remove some of it's rigidity

5000 lb winch cable is about 3/16 Dia in real world, so at that scale you are talking about a cable scale of 1/64 of an inch Dia. Pretty small, I would use thread gray in color and twist it into a 3 pair cable. Of course I am assuming that you are going for winch cable.

The twine used for teabags is an excellent choice that I have used before.

Mix a bit of silver paint in with a mixture of water and glue. Mix your twine in, coating all over. Pull out and wipe the excess off.

Then hang by your clamping tweezers with another set of tweezers on the end for weight (to stretch the twine) until partially dry. Then coil around your drum.

Wash or Dry brush a bit of thinned black to bring out the relief of the twisted threads in the twine.

You might take copper strands from lamp cord and braid three of them. This doesn't take as long as you might think and would look convincing in a small scale. Color it with sharpie or dry brush with model paint.

Tried wire for wire ropes in various forms and wasn't happy with the results.

Simplest technique I've found is to use cotton thread of an appropriate colour - dark grey or black. Thread is pretty hairy so first step run the thread through matte acrylic varnish - wipe off the excess - this gets rid of the hairiness. Then wind (twist) a number of the treated threads together to give the right diameter - use more varnish to stick the threads together.

Seems to work quite well and has the benefit it's easy to glue the "thread cable" to a cardmodel unlike wire which can be problematic.

Regards,

Charlie.
