Downloading models....from work!

I've got an online friend who is having difficulties getting to my free KoolWheelz models.
From what I understand, this person is using their "work" computer
and experiences a problem accessing the mediafire download for each model.

I have advised them that "work" computers sometimes have firewalls or blockers
to stop employees from downloading files from the internet (or from specific download servers).

What can I do?
The models are free, so I am reluctant to offer them on Disc (for a price).
I did this early on, when the collection was only at about 20 models, but nobody
was interested in paying for files that you could download for free. Understandable.

And now that the collection is 53(plus) its a lot more trouble to deal with.

I don't mind emailing out one model, if someone has no options to download,
but not multiple models.
So don't start emailing me asking me to do that!

I was just wondering if others have experienced the "work" download problem and found a method of getting around it?

If you don't have a computer at home, and rely on your office PC,
how do you deal with internet and/or download restrictions?
I'm curious.

You don't work for me, so I don't care if you abusing your work privelages.
Thats your problem. lol
If you get caught downloading KoolWheelz models, don't blame it on me!

Dave

Do not encourage or even suggest or open up discussion for work arounds for dowloading from work. People will risk losing their jobs.

It is a stupid idea to even think about using company equipment for personal use . Not worth it.

If they can't do it from home or a friend computer, then tough luck.......

I'm not encouraging, promoting or suggesting.
What you do at work is your business.
Are you aware how many people are on this forum right now...and still at work?
LOL

I'm just curious how people have dealt with this issue.

Curiosity killed the cat you know.
maybe we can get rid of a few cats in the process.

I always used company equipment for personal use.
It made up for the lousy pay I got.

I have an idea for a large cut out...you can print it yourself.
A lifesize cutout of yourself sitting at your Desk.
Then you can take an extended Lunch and everyone will think you are busy working away.
Who wants to buy one?

It probably relates to how the site you are down loading from is listed.

Most work computers have restrictions on accessing leisure & hobby sites.

Oh thats interesting...you can single out a "type" of website?
Kinda like blocking out Porn I guess.

How would that work?...keywords?

The problem I referenced is with Mediafire itself ( a file storage company)
...or the mediafire download page that gives you the link for the KoolWheelz file.

Since I don't work in an office, or have any experience with this
I am just curious as to how it works, what it affects, how to deal with it*
(*if your job allows you to deal with it!)

You could always try an alternate download service AirDave, as a mirror to your mediafire. I use Yandex.Disk for sharing various files. You can read about their upload limits here. It also has an application to help you sync your online disk with your local computer. It comes in all flavors (Windows, Mac, Linux), and eliminates having to access your web browser to perform any changes. As to an idea of how a download page looks/functions check out this thread with a simple model of mine.

To address your questions regarding how it's dealt with at work; the network administrators monitor/control all traffic across the network. They are the only ones that can approve or disapprove which websites employees can access. Typically the workarounds involve surfing from another site or installing an application of some sort. Installing an application usually requires administrator privileges also. The administrators for your friend's place of employ likely have a mechanism in place to filter out most if not all file sharing sites, because they are unnecessary from an employee point of view. Dealing with it typically involves consciously circumventing a security mechanism/protocol in place at the company, and as others have stated in the thread, that's usually the sort of offense that can get someone in real trouble. There's usually no "white hat" way to deal with it, except trying to find a service that they haven't blocked (which is usually unlikely).

If your friend perhaps doesn't have internet at home, he could just go to a local restaurant/cafe with free internet and try from there. They're usually a bit more lax about what sites they filter. Save that, the e-mail approach.

perfect!!
see, thats the reason why you ask a delicate question.

I never thought about going to the library or some other spot that offers the use
of a computer and internet.

I'll be honest with you...I use to have multiple sites for file hosting.
I didn't like uploading to multiple sites.
I didn't like having to remember log in credentials and procedures.
I got tired of the limitations of free hosting.

Now I pay for my services...and I have had little or no problems so far with mediafire.

I'll look through your links and suggestions though...

I have an email account on MSN (Hotmail). They give you a free online drive called Onedrive. Mine is currently 15gb. You can share a link provided through Onedrive, invite specific people, and I think you can link it to your Facebook account.

Gotta love free.

Just printed out your PT Boat. Nice!

1-48 103 PT Boat 09-04-11.pdf and your free conversion kit
From E-cards. yeah, about the date. I have been sitting on this one until I had time.

I did not buy the disruptive. What was I thinking! With my skill set your finished model photo waiver applies - "... your finished model may not be exactly as illustrated."
