Cameo Cutter

I saw a reference to this machine on the forum, found some basic information on the internet. But info from paper modellers who have used it would probably be much more useful. Does this machine scan a paper print, or does it need a file, or both? Will it read the printed page? Will it recognise the difference between cutting lines and scoring lines?

I bought my cameo specifically to aid in paper modeling.

To answer your questions:

1. The cameo does not have scanning capabilities and you will need a file with the cut lines.
2. It can read printed registration marks which will help in cutting alignment(it's very accurate when you get it right)
3. You can set different cutting profiles for cut lines and score lines when using the cameo. This will allow you to cut and score the models using the cameo.

I have one : Cameo Silhouette

I was very surprised at the begining : it is very very fast and precise (not more than one or two minutes to cut à full A4 model...). I spare lot of time for my work with it.

I use it when create models : Illustrator + Silhouette Connect (software to control the plotter with Illustrator)

Basically in Illustrator : one layer for the drawing, one layer for the shape, and layers for the automatic marks. You print with the marks+drawing visible. You cut with the shape+marks visible.

Il you start with a drawing you haven't made yourself you have to design the shape.

You can also use the free software Silhouette Studio to do all the steps.

I don't use it when I create illustrations with offset papers, but it is very usefull for papermodels.

I have a question regarding Cameo as well.
So is it able to print + cut + score ?

I assume that in Illustrator you are able to make one layer for scoring, another one for cutting.

The Cameo only cuts. It does not print.

You can adjust the pressure settings to cut with less pressure, so yes it will score.

I do not have the current plugin for Illustrator, but the one for the Silhouette SD that I have been using allows you to assign blade settings by layer or color. I'm assuming the same is true for the current plugin (and please correct my if I'm mistaken).

I have read where some people replace the blade with an embossing tip to run the page through for the fold lines, much like what you do with an empty ball point pin to score the fold lines, then reinstall the blade to run the page through to cut the parts.

For scoring, you may be able to substitute a stylus of some sort to use instead of the knife blade. I do this with a regular plotter (53" cutter/plotter) in which I have substituted the knife with charcoal pencils to generate sign layouts. It may take a little fiddling around to come up with something that fits in the knife holder that is held firmly. On mine, I found some plastic tubing that inside diameter is that of the pencil and the outside diameter is the same a the pen holder. This way you can use increase the down force on the stylus to make you scoring deeper or more distinct.

The link to the RMweb thread is probably the best, most comprehensive, PERSONAL experience thread on the web. I have found none better. It is long but it is GOOD. I have a Silhouette cutter and am very happy with it. Mine is a Curio, chosen specifically for the removable deck, which makes it much more versatile, IMO. It can handle (not cut, but handle) much thicker materials and can be removed during the cutting process and reinstalled readily without loss of indexing. And, yes the cutters can print, or emboss or score... lots of things other than cut. They print with pens, after all, they are just a plotter with a knife.
